A. Plan for reading the book-
 Teacher will introduce the book to the class and state the name, author, and illustrator
while pointing to them.
 Ask specific questions about the book to the listeners such as “What do they believe will
happen,” “do real cows actually type”
 After asking questions begin reading the story
 While reading ask questions such as “why did the cows do that?” “why does the farmer
say he cannot believe his ears?” “Why does farmer brown get made when ____?”
 At the end of the story ask the students if it was a good or bad idea for the farmer to give
the animals blankets (yes/no and why)
 Ask did the animals just WANT the blankets or did they NEED them?
B. Plan for the extension activity:
o Explain how in the story the cows typed what they were feeling and sent to the
farmer.
o Further, explain that the students will be pretending that they are the cows and
will write what they would like from the farmer
o Students will be encouraged to think about something very out of the ordinary
o For example, the cows wanted electric blankets, but students will write what they
will want (a swimming pool, new shoes, a dance floor)
o Students will grab their pencils form their pencil box and the teacher will hand out
paper to the students along with envelopes.
o On the board the teacher will write the following format
 Dear farmer,
____________________
(what the children_____
will ask for and write)__
____________________
Sincerely,
The Cows

o Teacher will explain that students will write in this format

o Along with explaining that “Dear farmer” is an introduction and the “Sincerely,
the Cows” is a closing.
o The teacher will also write specific high frequency words on the board (Better,
everyone, need, want, because)
o Explain that high frequency words are used everyday or every other day and are
very common to write.
o The teacher will explain that students need to incorporate at least 2 of those high
frequency words into their letter
o Activity will begin and teacher will walk around if students need help

5. Closure: Statement of how to end the activity that is a quick review of the lesson objective.

o At the end of the activity, students will fold letter and place in envelope, and place
envelope into a box that the teacher has at the front of the class
o The teacher will then have the students sit and the teacher will read each letter and
the out of the ordinary requests from “the cows”
o After each letter is read, the teacher will point out the high frequency words that
were used in the letter.
