Teaching Guide Outline

Introduction
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Goal Setting – The teacher presents to the students the need of doing paraphrasing and direct quoting.
The objectives will be associated to the concept of summarizing.
Motivation
The students form groups of five members each. Each group will pick a song written in English and try to
rewrite each line without changing its meaning. Then, with the same group, they will analyze the song. After the
time spent for analysis, they will share their answers to the class.
Instruction Delivery
The discussion on paraphrasing is going to be given to the students. It will be set in contrast with direct quoting.
The concepts that follow are going to be highlighted in the discussion:
 Paraphrasing means completely rewriting or rephrasing all the ideas in an original text while still
retaining the meaning.
 Direct quoting means using the exact words of the author and putting them inside parenthesis.
 Paraphrases and direct quotations should include citations.
 In academic writing, paraphrasing and summarizing are more preferred than direct quoting. Too many

direct quotes do not make the paper too scholarly.
Additional/supplementary information will be given to the students.
 Patchwork paraphrase is different from legitimate paraphrase. The former involves rearranging words
and/or phrases used in the original text into a new structure or pattern while the latter involves
modifying or changing the sentence structure of the original text and using a different vocabulary. Of the
two, legitimate paraphrase should be observed.
Students will also be asked to differentiate summaries, paraphrases, and direct quotes. They are going to present
their comparisons to the class.
Practice
Students are going to do the activity on pages 110-114.
Enrichment
Students are going to complete the activity on page 109, together with it is another set of activities where they
are going to create summaries and paraphrases of the given paragraphs.
Evaluation
The students are going to take a quiz on which statement serves as the best paraphrase of a given set of
statements. The other part of the quiz is about the making of a summary.
Valuing
It requires so much time and skill as one tries to create a summary or a paraphrase of a set of statements. This
reminds all of us to be very keen when it comes to compositions and in every task that we do. This further leads
to our ability to evaluate and assess very well whatever it is that is being given and served to us.
