CULMINATING TASK

PHILIPPINE POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE

Name:

Marxism is an ideology that is important in analyzing social, political, and economic events. This culminating
task serves as your assessment regarding your understanding of Marxism.

TRANSFER GOAL
You are an editorial cartoonist working at one of the country’s major broadsheets. You are asked by your
editor-in-chief to work on a compilation of editorial cartoon with the aim of raising awareness among the
students and the youth about the current state of the Philippine society and politics. Your editorial cartoon will
focus on the socioeconomic or political conditions brought about by the problems in governance using the lens
of Marxism. Henceforth, you shall focus on illustrating the concept of alienation, surplus value, and class
struggle in the Philippine context. Your output will be graded using the following rubric.

Additional Notes:
- What are example situations that I will present in my editorial cartoon?

o Alienation
 The teacher who gets detached from her social life due to the demanding nature of teaching
profession in the Philippines as a result of the corrupted system.
 The factory worker who spends most of his time producing goods but could not even afford
to buy one for himself.

o Surplus Value
 The teacher, nurse, doctor, laborer who works 24/7 but only gets paid for the 8 hour of work.
 The employee in one company who is given a work which is not related to his or her job
description but does not get paid for it. An example is a skilled individual hired as a company
secretary but is ordered by his boss and colleagues to be their personal driver since she is a
skilled driver; nevertheless, during the receiving of paycheck, she only receives her salary as
the company secretary.

o Class Struggle
 The division between the rich/ elite and the poor that continually increases due to the elites’
ownership of the means of production (e.g. The owner of SM who continues to earn more,
thus increasing the gap between him and his laborers.
 In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the poor cannot afford to have his family be swab
tested.

- Do not plagiarize your output. Corresponding deductions will be applied for outputs copied from the
internet.

- Use the attached paper for your illustration.

- Provide a short discussion (2 to 3 sentences) of your editorial cartoon.

- Just to reiterate, you are to make 3 editorial cartoon (one for alienation, one for surplus value, and one for
class struggle).
- Here is an example of an editorial cartoon. Please note its difference from a simple drawing.

The illustration depicts the concept of class struggle and alienation. Because of the existence of the capitalist’s
ownership of private property and rampant graft and corruption, the poor is left with no choice but to work
as their laborers/ employees receiving a very low salary. As a result, many Filipinos opted to work abroad with
the hope of receiving a higher salary and improving the socio-economic condition of their families. Their
decision to work abroad, however, results to alienation from oneself. Many OFWs have given up their passion
and profession in exchange of better income.
