Field Report
Profile Leveling

Submitted by:
TITLE :  Profile Leveling Date & Time :
Weather : Sunny Day

Objectives:

1. 1. To develop the skills in determining the difference in elevation in the roadway at

equal intervals.
2. To acquire the knowledge of plotting the profile along the center line of the road.
3. To develop the technical know-how to use precise level
4. To apply the value of teamwork to simplify the organization of the jobs/role.
5. To apply the value of excellence and patience in measuring the distance of the
ground.

Equipment:

Automatic Level Tripod

Instructions:

1. In carrying out profile leveling, a level is placed at a convenient location not necessarily
along the line of observation.
2. The instrument is to be positioned in such a way that first backsight can be taken clearly
on a B.M33.
3. Then, observations are taken at regular intervals along the central line and foresight to a
properly selected turning point, say TP1.
4. The instrument is then re-positioned to some other convenient location.
5. After proper adjustment of the instrument, observations are started from TP1 and;
6. Then at regular intervals terminating at another turning point, say TP2.
7. The instrument is then re-positioned to some other convenient location B.M34

Tabulation of Data

A. Computing HI’s and Elevation of stations

328.70 + 2.32 = 331.02 m (HI1)

331.02 – 1.7 = 329.3 (Elev. Sta 0 + 00)
331.02 – 2.2 = 328.8 (Elev. Sta 1 + 00)
331.02 – 1.2 = 329.8 (Elev. Sta 2 + 00)
331.02 – 0.9 = 330.1 (Elev. Sta 3 + 00)
331.02 – 3.43 = 327.59 m (Elev. TP1)

327.59 + 2.77 = 330.36 m (HI2)

330.30 – 2.2 = 328.2 (Elev. Sta 4 + 40)
330.30 – 3.7 = 326.7 (Elev. Sta 5 + 40)
330.30 – 1.6 = 328.8 (Elev. Sta 6 + 40)
330.30 – 3.06 = 327.30 m (Elev. TP2)

327.30 + 2.22 = 329.52m (HI3)

329.52 – 2.8 = 326.7 (Elev. Sta 8 + 00)
329.52 – 3.6 = 325.9 (Elev. Sta 9 + 00)
329.52 – 2.0 = 327.5 (Elev. Sta 10 + 00)
329.52 – 1.1 = 328.4 (Elev. Sta 11 + 00)
329.52 – 2.45 = 327.07 (Elev. BM34)

B. Determining Backsight and Foresight sums.

∑ BS = 2.32 + 2.77 + 2.22 = +7.31 m

∑ FS = - (3.43 + 3.06 + 2.45) = -8.94 m

C. Arithmetic Check:

328.70 m (Elevation of BM33)

+ 7.31 m (∑ BS)
336.01 m (Sum)
- 8.94 m (∑ FS)
327.7 m (Checks with elevation of BM34)

D. Tabulated Solution

STA BS HI FS IFS ELEV

BM33 2.32 331.02 328.70 m
0 + 00 1.7 329.3
1 + 00 2.2 328.8
2 + 00 1.2 329.8
3 + 00 0.9 330.1
TP1 2.77 330.36 3.43 327.59
4 + 00 2.2 328.2
5 + 00 3.7 326.7
6 + 00 1.6 328.8
TP2 2.22 329.52 3.06 327.30
8 + 00 2.8 326.7
9 + 00 3.6 325.9
10 + 00 2.0 327.5
11 + 00 1.1 328.4
BM34 2.45 327.07
+7.31m -8.94 m
(∑ BS) (∑ FS)

Conclusion:
The theory behind profile leveling is that by adding the backsight to the known elevation,
we would be able to get the height of the instrument. Then, by subtracting the height of the
instrument to the foresight we would be able to the elevation of that point where we took the
foresight. We would repeat this until we get to benchmark. The benchmark33 in this survey is
328.70 m and the benchmark34 is 327.07 m.
