Day 1 Launch Lesson

Objectives:
1. Students will be introduced to the class project.
2. Students will go on a virtual museum tour to learn about how to construct a museum exhibit.

● Intro 8 minutes
○ (re-explain my purpose of being in the class, establish my expectations as a
teacher (5 mins); Leave buffer for letting students join the class (3 mins))
● Lead to idea of museums 7 minutes
○ “Back before covid-19, what were some fun things you liked to do around DC?”
■ Mention of museums- if not “How many of you have visited one of the
Smithsonians?” “Which is your favorite?”
■ What types of museums are there?
● Science, art, history
○ “But what is a museum? What is its purpose?”
■ Key idea established here: by explaining what museum is; students will
know the main purpose of their project
● Collection of ideas, artifacts, pieces which have historical and/or
cultural SIGNIFICANCE compiled together to produce a
NARRATIVE
● Unit explanation 10 minutes
○ In some ways, our bodies are like a collection. Can anyone think of reasons why
that statement is true?
■ They know about cells, so start there is convo is quiet -> build up to
organs -> systems
○ Go over standards + objectives
■ KWL
■ Let students determine the significance of learning about body systems
● HUMAN HEALTH
○ How might we share SIGNIFICANT information about the systems in our
bodies?
■ Museum
● Why would this be a good idea?
○ Share information with the public in a fun, engaging,
informative manner
■ Issue with covid-19=museums are closed? What did they do?
● Virtual museum!
○ Introduce project
■ Creating a virtual museum with the focus of our pieces being centered
around body systems
■ Go to overview
● Virtual Museum Tour (frame it as a field trip)(10 minutes)
○ Provide links to museum sites
■ First 5 minutes: National Gallery of Art
■ Next 5 mins: Renwick Gallery
■ How are the pieces displayed?
■ What are some commonalities you noticed in the virtual exhibits?
■ What types of things are found in museums?
■ What does the art look like?
● Is it always realistic?
● If it's not realistic, how do you know what the piece is showing?
■ What are some important pieces of information to include with the pieces?
● Begin drafting rubric for project: (5 minutes)
○ What is the overall purpose of the museum?
○ How will we ensure each exhibit contributes to the overall narrative?
○ What types of pieces should be included in this museum?
■ Lead toward art pieces they design
○ What elements must be included with every piece?
■ Date, medium, artist, description
○ How will group members collaborate?
● Final part of lesson: (Exit ticket)
○ Poll about body systems
Day 2 Lesson Plan
Objectives:
1. Students will explain the role of the excretory system within the human body.
2. Students will investigate diseases that impact specific body systems.

6 mins Greet students: wait until 6 minutes after “start” of class to allow for stragglers
● Greet students by name
● Have students log into nearpod- tell them they must answer the question, that is how I'm
going to know that they are logged on and ready to start class
● Engage in discussion about favorite museums/what theme of museum they would want to
build

10 minutes: finish field trip activity

● Instruct students to open their class note book
● Review instructions
○ 5 minutes for exploration and notetaking
● Nearpod: 1 minute- list one solidarity and/or one difference between the two sites we
visited
● Baseball at Night example
○ What was similar about the descriptions of the art (date, artist, location, medium,
title)?
○ “Wall text” is brief, and provides context.

“These are considerations we want to consider as we determine how we want to construct or

museum website”

5 minutes: Levels of organization

● Quick discussion (mentioned last class that cells were the smallest… but how does it
build up from there?)
● Cells form tissues, which form organs, which form organ systems
● There are 11 systems that we will be discussing
● Watch 2 min video about levels of organization
○ Tell them there will be a check for understanding immediately following the
video
● 1 minute nearpod matching activity (which is the smallest where 1= smallest, 4=largest)

10 minutes: Excretory System Spotlight

● Google Drive
● Individual student folder
● SHARE SCREEN TO SHOW THEM
● Have students popcorn to read paragraph
● As a class, fill out the worksheet together

2 minutes: Show students my art + wall text example

15 minutes: case study activity

● Break students up into their groups and explain case study activity.
● Each group will have one case study pertaining to a particular disease.
○ Their goal is to figure out what system the disease affects.
○ TELL STUDENTS I WILL BE LOOKING FOR A VOLUNTEER FROM EACH
GROUP TO SHARE
○ Monitor google docs

5 minutes: class discussion

● reporter tells the class-
○ 1) their disease
○ 2) what body system is it associated with
○ 3) how did they know

2 mins Project Overview

● explain the logistics of the project in more detail

5 minutes Time to climb exit ticket’

3 minutes: Homework explanation

● Note Sheet for body system to be completed by next class
Day 3 Lesson Plan
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the parts and functions of major body systems.
2. Students will explain which body system is being used in a given scenario.

6 minutes: Wait for everyone to join

● In the chat have students write about their weekend

15 minutes: Maps (engage)

● Ask students about their familiarity with maps
● Share screen to OpenStreetMap- go to DC; add layers
○ What is the purpose of having so many layers
○ What kinds of things do maps show us
■ (how space is related/interconnected)
● Relate back to human bodies
○ Our bodies are complex, layered systems (like a map!)

15 minutes: Learn about the function + composition of 11 body systems

● Interactive human body
● Explain directions + demonstrate on the website (2-3 minutes)
● 7 minutes: students explore + complete matching worksheet
● 5 minutes: Review worksheet answers as a class

15 minutes: how do systems interact

● Propose different scenarios to the class in which two systems are being described in
action
● Students post their answers on nearpod
● Class discussion

5 minutes: Interacting systems (extended)

● Students come up with their own examples of two systems working together
● Ex. Taking a bite into a lemon
○ Muscular + digestive

End of class ~5 minutes:

HW: draft prepared for next class
Day 4 Lesson Plan
Objectives:
Students will critique each other’s initial drafts in an effective manner.

6 minutes: Arrival to class

● Wait for students to arrive
● In the chat. Have them tell me the best and worst part of online school

5 minutes: Nearpod time to climb review

● Questions about individual body systems + their components

10 minutes: How to critique

○ Specific
○ Goal oriented
○ No opinions
○ Respectful
● Nearpod exercise; good critique or bad critique

35 minutes: Critique session
