BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Money is anything that possesses general acceptability as a medium of exchange

and a measure of value. It is an energy for life, and could purchase everything except the

virtues that our parents and the church inculcate within us. In fact, if we have no money,

we can't sustain our mortal life. Money is as well as blood in our body. Therefore, one of

us can't lack of it, neither can we have too much of it.

An allowance is money given to a child at regular intervals to teach him how to

manage money at an early age. School-aged children are starting to develop the cognitive

skills necessary to understand basic monetary ideas, such as identifying coins, counting

change, and matching small amounts of money to items they want to buy. Apart from

introducing children to basic economics, money lessons have other benefits. Money

illustrates parental values and teaches children about the relative worth of things, time,

and effort.

According to a survey conducted by philSTAR.com, a high school student's

average amount of allowance per day is one hundred fifty pesos to two hundred fifty

pesos. The coverage of allowance is fifty to one hundred pesos for lunch, thirty to fifty

pesos for snacks, twenty pesos on average for photocopies, and fifty to eighty pesos for

school requirements like printing, buying pens, etc.

Budgeting a student's allowance is important especially now that many families

are being practical because of the inevitable increase in the prices of goods that they

consume. There are some students that are responsible enough in allocating their

allowances while there are some who don't. The purpose of our study is to assess the

grade ten students of St. Anthony's College if they are spending their allowances on their

needs which include the payment for food, transportation, school supplies and projects.

Moreover, the researchers wanted to know if the students also allot a part of his/her

allowance for leisure and self-satisfaction. If a student knows how to budget his

allowance for the whole week then his parents would feel relieved to know that the

money they earned is spent for something good and productive.
