QUESTION 1

The lifetime of the battery from brand P and brand Q is studied. A random sample of 10 batteries
is selected from each brand and the battery lifetime (hours) are as follows:

P 21, 20, 24, 27, 16, 25, 20, 19, 18, 23


Q 20, 21, 20, 18, 19, 25, 22, 20, 22, 18

i) Calculate the point estimates for the population mean and variance for the lifetime of the battery
from brand P and Q.

ii) What are the qualities of a good estimator?

iii) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean lifetime of the battery from brand Q. Based
on the result, can we conclude that the lifetime of the battery is more than 23 hours?
(4 marks)

iv) Assuming that the variances of the battery lifetime from these two brands are equal, construct
a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the mean battery lifetime of brand P and Q.
Based on the results, are the means equal? Interpret.

Question 2a

Twelve cars were equipped with radial tires and driven over a test course. Then the same 12 cars
(with the same drivers) were equipped with regular belted tires and driven over the same course.
After each run, the cars’ gas economy (in km/l) was measured. The following table shows the
result.

Interpret the result.
iii) Based on result in (ii), can we conclude that the radial tires produce better fuel economy?

The quality department of industry requires that the thickness of steel bolts produced should have
a standard deviation less than 1.0 mm. A random sample consisting 10 steel bolts were measure
and the following output Minitab was produced.

The chi-square method is only for the normal distribution.
