2- Samantha, an English girl, is learning Spanish. Read the text.

I do lots of subjects at school, but my favourite subject is Spanish - it’s really good fun. I’m good at it too.
The pronunciation is quite easy - you say things as they are written, although it’s not easy to pronounce the
«jota». I like listening to tapes and trying to speak, but the grammar is very difficult. For example, the verb
tenses are very complicated - all those endings, like -o, -as, -a, and all that. And then I have problems with
all the different ways of saying «you» in Spanish. And the adjectives go after the nouns and you have to
make them masculine, feminine or plural. And in Spanish there are two words for «be» and two words for
«know» and six words for «that» and... Ah, and it’s difficult to remember if words are masculine or
feminine - I mean, is it «silla» or «sillo»? I can never remember. Maybe I’m not so good at Spanish!

My favourite day of the week is XXXX because I don’t have to go to school. If I feel tired, I stay in bed
until after 10 o’clock. Sometimes I read and have a cup of coffee (my mum doesn’t know about the
coffee!). I also listen to music. If I feel energetic, I get up and take the dog for a walk in the park. He loves
going there and we have a great time.
In the afternoon, I usually meet my friends and we talk and make plans for the evening. Sometimes there
is a party at someone’s house. If there is a good film on, we go to the cinema. We like films with lots of
action. I also like romantic films but most of my friends don’t like them so I don’t see many! Occasionally,
I go skating with my sister. We went last week and I met a very nice boy. I think I’m going to see him this
weekend.
Sunday is a good day too but not SO good because in the afternoon I start to think about going to school
the next day! I also have to do my homework and prepare my clothes.

Two years later, in 1977, he made his first science-fiction movie, Close Encounters of the third kind. This
film amazed he critics. It was both incredible and yet realistic, combining a superbly accurate representation
of everyday American family life with hugely imaginative images of aliens from another world. This theme
E.T. Nº 13 D.E. 21: AGUETE - BALBUENA - POLVERELLI - RATKOVIC

of the interaction of humans with aliens was followed up in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, made in 1982. In this
movie, Spielberg demonstrated his unique ability to portray children, their emotions, feelings and mannerisms.
In fact, it is often said that he is the world from a child's point of view.
During the eighties Spielberg made a series of films starring Harrison Ford as the scientist Indiana Jones:
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the
Last Crusade (1989). These films were based on the types of adventure film Spielberg had watched as a
child, but using all the latest special effects and Spielberg's own unique sense of humour.
Steven Spielberg has also made two films with very serious themes, both adapted from highly acclaimed
books, The Color Purple, made in 1985, explored racial prejudice against black people in the Southern
United States and Empire of the Sun (1987) showed the Second World War in the Far East from a young
English boy's point of view.
Spielberg's most commercially successful films so far is Jurassic Park, made in 1993, the story of a scientist
who manages to re-create dinosaurs which had been extinct for 160 million years. This movie combines
many of Spielberg's interests - science fiction, adventure, and the reaction of children which confronted
with new and potentially terrifying experiences.

SECOND CONDITIONAL

wIn Second Conditional sentences the verb in the if clause is always in the Simple Past tense. The verb
in the main clause is in Conditional tense.
NAME:........................................................................................COURSE:..............................YEAR:..........................

Condition Result
If- clause (Simple Past) + Main clause (Conditional + infinitive verb)

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

wThe main clause can also be at the beginning of the sentence. In this case, don't use a comma.
E.T. Nº 13 D.E. 21: AGUETE - BALBUENA - POLVERELLI - RATKOVIC

Example: I would send her an invitation if I found her address.

Note: Main clause and / or if clause might be negative. See Simple Past and Conditional I on how to form
negative sentences.
Example: If I had a lot of money, I wouldn't stay here.

wWere instead of Was

In IF Clauses Type II, we usually use ‚were' - even if the pronoun is I, he, she or it -.
Example: If I were you, I would not do this.

wUse:
Conditional Sentences Type II refer to situations in the present. An action could happen if the present
situation were different. I don't really expect the situation to change, however. I just imagine "what would
happen if …"

Example: If I found her address, I would send her an invitation.

I would like to send an invitation to a friend. I have looked everywhere for her address, but I cannot find
it. So now I think it is rather unlikely that I will eventually find her address.

Example: If John had the money, he would buy a Ferrari.

I know John very well and I know that he doesn't have much money, but he loves Ferraris. He would like
to own a Ferrari (in his dreams). But I think it is very unlikely that he will have the money to buy one in the
near future.

Nature's Perfect Machine.

The Australian Crocodile is the largest crocodile in the world. It can grow up to seven metres long and the
biggest can weigh up to 1000 kilos. It has only two muscles to open its mouth but 40 to close it!
NAME:........................................................................................COURSE:..............................YEAR:..........................

What makes crocodiles so dangerous is that they attack incredibly quickly and they take their victims
under the water to drown them. They usually attack in the water, but they can suddenly come out of a river
and attack animals or people, and they can run on a land at 17 km/h.

Every year in Australia there are crocodile attacks on humans. Two years ago a 24-year-old German
tourist died when she went for a swim in a lake. Although there were signs warning people that there might
be crocodiles, the girl and her friends decided to have a midnight swim. The girl suddenly disappeared and
E.T. Nº 13 D.E. 21: AGUETE - BALBUENA - POLVERELLI - RATKOVIC

next morning her body was found. Near it was a four-metre crocodile. And only last month two Australian
boys watched in horror as their friend was killed by a crocodile when they were washing their mountain
bikes in a river. They climbed a tree and stayed there for 22 hours while the crocodile waited below.

But you CAN survive a crocodile attack. Last year Norman Pascoe, a 19-year-old, was saved from a
crocodile when his aunt hit it on the nose. Norman's aunt said: 'I hit it and I shouted, "Help!" The crocodile
suddenly opened its mouth and my nephew escaped'.

If you were hiking in the North American wilderness and you saw a bear coming slowly towards you,

'I'd talk to it quietly.'

'I'd walk away slowly.'
'I'd try not to look at it'.
'I'd make a loud noise.'
'I'd run'.
'I'd climb a tree.'
'I'd pretend to be dead.'
E.T. Nº 13 D.E. 21: AGUETE - BALBUENA - POLVERELLI - RATKOVIC

'I'd spray pepper in its eyes.'

'I'd try to fight it'

2- Now read the rest of the article. Which sentence is the best summary?

a) There's nothing you can do if a bear attacks you.

b) There are lots of things you can do if a bear attacks you.
c) Bears always try to avoid people.

Well, all of these are possible - the best thing to do depends on the mood that the bear is in. If it comes
towards you slowly, experts say you should talk to it quietly, walk away as slowly as possible, and don't
look the bear in the eye. It's possible that it will lose interest.

If not... then be aggressive, make a noise, and wave your hands. If this doesn't work, and the bear
continues to come towards you, then run. But only if you are sure that you can reach somewhere safe
before the bear reaches you. And remember that bears can run as fast as an Olympic sprinter. Don't
climb a tree. Bears climb them all day long, and they can climb better than you can. Water is also not
safe. Bears love water and are excellent swimmers. If you car is nearby, try to get inside.

If a bear attacks you, then you can pretend to be dead. Bears who don't want to eat you may lose
interest and go away. If you have pepper spray, then spray it in the bear's face. This works 75% of the
time. The final possibility is to fight back. Most bears are much bigger and stronger than you, but they
may be surprised.

Our final advice? It's much better to avoid bears than to do any of the things above....

1- Read a review of a new restaurant.

G and G’s Café opened in Dulwich Village yesterday. There were queues down the street all day as
people came to try the exciting international menu.
G and G’s specialises in all day breakfasts from around the world. The menu is really varied. It includes
the full English breakfast with eggs and bacon, eggs ranchero-style from Mexico and pumpkin waffles

from the USA. You can even order miso soup and rice from Japan. The food is fresh, and a lot of it is
produced locally. G and G’s serves breakfasts from 7 am to 11pm, and also offers dinner and a range of
daily specials.

I was very impressed by quality of the food. I tried the pumpkin waffles topped with cinnamon cream
cheese, and they were really delicious. The blueberry pancakes were a big success with my nine-year-old
son. The café is modern and stylish, and is located on one of the most beautiful streets in Dulwich Village.

The owners even provide international newspapers for customers to read while they wait for a table.

There are one or two small problems, though. I was slightly concerned about the high prices: some of the
dishes are over $10. Also, I didn’t particularly like the loud music - I couldn’t hear what the waiter was
asking me. In my opinion, the owners could improve the seating arrangements, because the tables are too
close together. Another weak point is the service -it took nearly forty-five minutes for our food to arrive.

Overall, I think G and G’s has got it right with it’s exciting menu, and with a few improvements it will
become a local favourite. I had one or two reservations about the service and prices, but I’d definitely
recommend a visit.

Ireland’s schools have suffered from an increase in discipline problems in recent years. A survey published
last week on students’ behaviour found that 97% of staff suffered unacceptable levels of verbal abuse,
threatening behaviour or problems with truancy. Instead of penalising the schools, the Irish government
wants to offer more support. The minister for education and science, Mary Hanafin, says: «Teachers have
to address problem behaviour in the classroom, and shouldn’t automatically expel the problem students.
Of course, there are some factors involved that schools can’t control, including the behaviour of children at
home and on the streets. However, we believe the first step is to provide more assistance to the teachers
and students in the classroom».
She has suggested a number of different solutions to the problem. The first step is for schools to identify
serious discipline problems. Then, further measures can be implemented. These include providing more
support teachers in the classroom, recruiting learning mentors for the problem students and improving
communication with parents.
Although there is a long way to go, Hanfin is confident that these measures will be successful. She had this
to say at a recent teacher’s conference: «Clearly, you face a number of key challenges in your schools, but
we need to address other wider issues in society. Young people need to understand the values of respect
and responsibility, and parents and local communities will also have an important role to play in this. Make
no mistake, our campaign to stop disruptive behaviour in Irish schools has begun».

PASSIVE VOICE

VERB TO BE
NAME:........................................................................................COURSE:..............................YEAR:..........................

S. Pre: AM - ARE - IS
S. Past: WAS - WERE
Pre. Cont: AM - ARE - IS + BEING
Past. Cont.: WAS - WERE + BEING
S. Fut.: WILL BE
E.T. Nº 13 D.E. 21: AGUETE - BALBUENA - POLVERELLI - RATKOVIC

P. Perf.: HAVE - HAS + BEEN

wWe use the passive when we do not know or we are not interested in the doer of the action. We
use the passive when we are interested in the predicate.

wTo make the passive:

1- We put the direct object at the beginning of the sentence.

2- We add the appropriate tense of the verb to be.
3- We put the main verb in the past participle.

Examples:

We take the books. The books are taken.

We took the books. The books were taken.
They are buying the material. The material is being bought.
They were buying the material. The material was being bought.
He will clean the machine. The machine will be cleaned.
He has cleaned the machine. The machine has been cleaned.

wMost passive voice sentences in English have lost the original active voice subject because it isn’t
necessary. If we want to say who or what does the action, we use the preposition by.

Examples:

An earthquake destroyed the town. The town was destroyed by an earthquake.

Bell invented the phone. The phone was invented by Bell.

people went by ferry, but not Kenneth Blyton! He crossed the Channel in a metal bottle with a small
motor. This was his third crossing, but his first time by bottle. When he arrived at Cap Gris Nez near
Calais, he told newspaper reporters about his next plan.
«I have already crossed the Channel on a bed and by barrel», he said. «Next year I intend to cross on a
giant banana».
