Welcome back.

In the
previous two lessons, we discussed the
key characteristics of a traditional
and agile leader. In this lecture, we will
address the ultimate question. Which one is better? Traditional and agile
leadership are opposites. In management books,
one is often favored over another, but should it be? Is one good and is
the other one bad? The short answer is no. There are two main categories of
attributes within each type, they're mindset and behavior. In my experience,
working with leaders, having a traditional
mindset isn't sufficient to thrive in
today's environment. Today, more than ever before, we need to employees
to be creative, innovative and zestful at work. A traditional mindset
does not help facilitate creativity
and it kills it. But having a traditional mindset does not mean that you won't be
able to find a place under the sun and have a
successful career. It's worth mentioning that having a fixed traditional
mindset might limit your career growth
because you will be less prepared to thrive in fast
changing environments. Since you have come
this far in the course, and I thank you for
sticking with me, I suspect that you don't
want to become vulnerable to environmental changes and
then suffer as a consequence. I encourage you to be
more of an agile leader, and that's what we're
working on in this course. Regardless of what
mindset you have today, the specialization
will take you on a journey of transformation and provide you with
tools of becoming less traditional and more agile. But what about the behavior?
Which one is right and
which one is wrong? Neither one is right or wrong. Savvy leaders know that you
have to have a level of situational awareness and choose the appropriate approach
for the organization and the problem. If you subscribe to an agile behavior model
and you get a job in a
traditional organization, you will need to behave as
a traditional leader would. Otherwise, you will not be
able to accomplish much and no one who works in the organization will understand
what you want from them. Awareness is key in choosing the right approach for the
team and the organization. As you probably have guessed, being able to apply these
approaches based
on the situation and environment requires a
certain level of flexibility. Having a flexible
mindset will allow you to pivot quickly
based on the problem, team or organization at hand. It will enable you to thrive
instead of fighting
for your survival. Before we conclude this module, I'd like to invite you to take
an agile leader self-assessment in the agile leader workbook, which will serve as a
baseline as you'd begin to working on transforming
yourself in Course 2. In the next video, we'll review the key
concepts of the module.
