Calculation for PFI Plant

kVA kVA kVAR

Φ1 Φ2
kW kW

A) Consider Power factor (cos Φ1) = 0.70

Φ1 = cos⁻¹(0.70)
tan Φ1 = tan (cos⁻¹0.70)
= 1.0202

B) Required Power factor (cos Φ2) = 0.95

Φ2 = cos⁻¹(0.95)
tan Φ2 = tan (cos⁻¹0.95)
= 0.328

Capacitor Bank (Capacity of PFI Plant) required to enhance PF from 0.70 to 0.95
kVAR = kW (tan Φ1- tan Φ2)
= 120 (1.202-0.328)
= 120 X 0.6922
= 83.064
90 KVAR
The 90 kVAR PFI plant (Auto) is capable for maintaining power fator from 0.70 to 0.95 lagging.
