Section – 1 (Power Transformer)

A. Purpose: The purpose of this document is to design (sizing calculation) main

incoming power transformer of Main Receiving Substation (MRSS) to fed the
electrical energy Seawater Desalination Plant Scope: This document covers the sizing
of following equipment
i. Main incomer power transformer at MRSS.
B. Input data required
The following factor are considered while choosing the transformer size
Sl. No. Parameters Value
1. Ambient Temperature 400 C
2. Incoming voltage available 132 kV
3. Location Outdoor switchyard
4. Standby required 100 %

C. Sizing Calculation
1. For Continuous load demand
Sl. No. Feeder Load (kVA)
1. Desalination plant Load 2800
2. IREl Incoming plant Load 5000
3. Spare Capacity (20% of connected 1560
load)
Total 9360 kVA

Total continuous maximum demand = 9360 kVA

Based on past design experience of the existing facilities, a suitable diversity factor of 1.3 is
considered.
So, Simultaneous maximum demand is = 7200 kVA
Total spare capacity of 20% is considered as per DBR
So transformer continuous rating with taking the spare capacity is = 7200 x 1.2 kVA =8640
kVA
As the transformer is designed for ambient temperature of 40o C the de-rating factor for
ambient temperature is not considered.
As there is no motor connected at 11 kV starting kVA is not considered.
Based on the continuous base load of 8640 kVA , the transformer size selected is = 10/12.5
MVA.
Neutral grounding resistor:
Neutral Grounding Resistor (NGR) will be installed in the 11 kV side of the transformer to
restrict the earth fault current and as to match with existing installed system.
11
Maximum earth fault voltage will be = = 6.35 𝑘𝑉
√3

It is desired to restrict the earth fault current between FLC and twice the FLC of the
transformer.
12500
FLC is = = 656 𝐴
11 𝑥 √3

To match with the existing system the maximum fault current is chosen as 1200 A
6350
So value of the NGR required is = 1200 = 5.29 𝑜ℎ𝑚

Conclusion:
a. The transformers selected are 2 nos. of 132/11 kV Oil immersed 10/12.5 MVA
(ONAN/ONAF) transformer in the 2 100% configuration. During the normal operation,
both the transformers shall share the total load equally in the ratio 1:1.
b. The value of NGR is 5.29 ohms.
