He expoused the term “freedom of expression” in the Philippine Constitution. He is highly
regarded as one of the most influential and significant Filipino filmmakers in the history
of Philippine cinema.
In 1997, he was recognized as a National Artist for film and cinema. He co-founded the
organization Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), that aims to help artists in addressing
issues of the society & country. He was recognized by his alma mater, University of the
Philippines, for his involvement in the fight against Martial Law in the Philippines.
Brocka took his social activist spirit in the screen, wherein he has directed 66 films that gave life
& hope for the marginalized sectors of the society. He has gained recognition & awards from
FAMAS, Cannes Film Festival, CCP, etc.
