Prayer Warriors: Joshua

CHARACTERS: Host, Joshua
PROPS: none
SETTING: TV studio
RUN TIME: 4 minutes
SCRIPTURE/BASED ON: Ephesians 6:12, Romans 15:30, Exodus 17: 10-14, Deuteronomy 34:7

HOST: Our first guest today is that amazing prayer warrior, a great military leader, the guy that defeated 31 kings
and even stopped the sun and moon in their tracks – Joshua, son of None. (JOSHUA enters) So are you some kind
of clone since you are the son of none?

JOSHUA: No. My father’s name was Nun N-U-N.

HOST: Your father was a nun? Did he wear a habit?

JOSHUA: No. He was a regular guy. Nun was his name.

HOST: Oh. Did he teach you how to fight?

JOSHUA: Actually, I pretty much learned on the job. One day the Amalekites showed up to fight us and Moses
told me to pick some guys and meet them in battle.

HOST: I suppose Moses was too old and feeble to lead an army, seeing as how he was 80 or something.

JOSHUA: No. In fact, Deuteronomy 34:7 tells us that even when he was 120 years old, Moses still had his
strength.

HOST: Then he must have been too scared to fight?

JOSHUA: No. I fought the physical battle in the valley while Moses was fighting a spiritual battle on the hill.

HOST: What do you mean?

JOSHUA: Moses stood on top of the hill where he could see the battle. He had the staff of God in his hands. As
long as Moses held up his hands, we were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were
winning.

HOST: Was it a magic wand that made you win?

JOSHUA: No. Prayer was the key. Did you know our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms?

HOST: No. Can you explain?

JOSHUA: In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus said, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The
spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

HOST: Go on.

JOSHUA: Israelites prayed with their hands held up to heaven, ready to receive whatever God sent. When Moses’
hands grew tired from this spiritual warfare, Aaron and Hur took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Then
they held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.

HOST: Kind of supporting him in prayer? (JOSHUA nods) Then what happened?

JOSHUA: We overcame the Amalekite army and God told Moses to write what happened on a scroll as something
to be remembered and God said specifically make sure that Joshua hears it.

HOST: That way you knew it was prayer, not you, that won the battle.

JOSHUA: Exactly. After learning that lesson, those 31 other kings were a piece of cake.

HOST: Too bad those days are over.

JOSHUA: Not at all. Don’t you know what Paul said? I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ
and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

HOST: So when we pray, we’re kind of like warriors in training?

JOSHUA: You could think of it like that. You’ve heard of the armor of God, right?

HOST: Sure – helmet of salvation, sword of the spirit, shield of faith.

JOSHUA: After listing all six pieces of armor, Paul says “Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of
prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

HOST: I think I’m catching on. There really is such a thing as a prayer warrior.

Prayer Warriors: Judges & Kings

CHARACTERS: Host 1 (very hyper), Samson, Host 2 (timid and confused), Asa, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah
PROPS: rope belt
SETTING: TV studio
RUN TIME: 2-3 minutes per scene
SCRIPTURE/BASED ON: Judges 16:21-27, 1 Chronicles 5: 18-20, 2 Chronicles 13: 1-18; 2 Chronicles 14: 1-12,
2 Chronicles 20

Scene 1

HOST 1: Welcome folks as we explore how to be strong. (flexing muscles and posing) Who doesn’t want that?
Chicks dig it, guys envy it and I rock it. (offstage snickers. HOST 1, stops flexing and posing, turns and scowls)
As I said, we are in for a real treat. Our first guest is the original man of steel, a guy who could smack down the
entire WWF with one hand - Samson – the strongest man in the world. (SAMSON enters) Samson, welcome to the
show. We are so excited you have agreed to show us how to be strong.
SAMSON: Happy to be here.
HOST 1: Are you going to bench press an 18 wheeler for us?
SAMSON: No. (as soon as SAMSON says “no” HOST 2 cuts him off to ask another question. SAMSON should
look like he’s trying to finish a sentence, slowly getting more and more annoyed with HOST 1. HOST 1 should
ham it up, even dropping to the floor to demo a leg press or grab a chair like he’s wrestling a gator)
HOST 1: Leg press an elephant?
SAMSON: No. (HOST 2 cuts him off)
HOST 1: Wrestle three alligators all at one time?
SAMSON: No, (SAMSON clamps a hand over HOST 2’s mouth), I’m going to teach you to pray.
HOST 1: (bewildered and momentarily speechless and motionless) Pray?
SAMSON: That’s right. If I learned anything in my life it was …
HOST 1: (cutting him off) Not to get a haircut? Not to trust women? Not to… (SAMSON clamps a hand over
HOST 1’s mouth, finally keeping him quiet)
SAMSON: I learned that prayer should never be a last resort.
HOST 1: (squirming free) I went to a resort once. It had palm trees, (SAMSON starts to clamp a hand over HOST
1’s mouth. HOST 1 stops himself and slowly asks) Can you explain?
SAMSON: I got used to relying on myself, my strength, not God, the one who gave me that strength. It wasn’t
until the Philistines shackled me, gouged out my eyes, and ridiculed me while I worked like an ox (HOST 1 cuts
him off)
HOST 1: Don’t you mean worked like a dog or smelled like an ox? … (SAMSON clamps a hand over HOST 1’s
mouth again)
SAMSON: It was only then that I prayed to God. (SAMSON pulls off his rope belt and starts tying HOST 1 up as
he talks. HOST 1 struggles to get out of the hold SAMSON has him in as Samson addresses the audience) Check
out some of David’s prayers in Psalms. Say a couple for this guy while you’re at it. (SAMSON exits carrying
HOST 1)
Sign appears reading: Standby while we find a replacement host. Optional: choral reading

Scene 2

HOST 2: (kind of nervous and awkward, like someone just shoved him onto the stage) Hi folks, I’m actually an
intern in training to the assistant back up cameraman but since the regular host of this show is a bit tied up at the
moment, They are making me fill in. (holds card up to see what to say next) Our next guest is King Asa.
Welcome, your highness. Are you going to show us some card tricks? (sing song) I gotta king-uh, I gotta ace-uh.
ASA: I don’t do card ticks
HOST 2: Do you play professional poker?
ASA: No. I was a king of Judah.
HOST 2: Still doesn’t ring a bell.
ASA: I’m sure you heard of King David.
HOST 2: Yes. I have. He killed Goliath. (looking around in panic) Goliath isn’t here, is he? (HOST 2 crawls
under his seat)
ASA: No. Calm down. No giants. (HOST 2 cautiously retakes his seat) David was my great, great grandfather
and Solomon was my great grandfather.
HOST 2: Did they teach you to play cards?
ASA: No. No one taught me to play cards. I’m not here to talk about cards. I was a king. The kind with a crown,
not the kind in a deck of cards.
HOST 2: Oh. So what are you here to tell us?
ASA: Prayer and the time war broke out between Jeroboam and my father, Abijah.
HOST 2: I love stories about battles. (looks around nervously) As long as there aren’t any giants.
ASA: No giants. But our army was outnumbered two to one. Jeroboam had sent men around ambush us from
behind while the main army was in front of us.
HOST 2: Sounds like a desperate situation.
ASA: It was.
HOST 2: What did you do? Run? Hide? Fight?
ASA: My father prayed.
HOST 2: Prayed? How did that work out?
ASA: God gave us the victory. Jeroboam’s army fell flat on its face while ours won hands down because we
trusted God.
HOST 2: How about when you were king?
ASA: For ten years the country was at peace.
HOST 2: Because you built up a good defense system?
ASA: No, we had peace because we put God first.
HOST 2: What happened after 10 years?
ASA: Zerah the Ethiopian came against us with a gigantic army and three hundred chariots.
HOST 2: Gigantic? As in giants?

ASA: No giants, just a giant sized army.

HOST 2: What did you do?
ASA: I prayed: “O God, you aren’t impressed by numbers or intimidated by a show of force once you decide to
help: Help us, O God; we have come out to meet this huge army because we trust in you and who you are. Don’t
let mere mortals stand against you!”
HOST 2: Sounds like something David might have prayed when he faced Goliath. Did God answer?
ASA: Yes; the Ethiopians ran for their lives.
HOST 2: (aside to audience) Speaking of running, that’s what I need to do – run along. I mean, shouldn’t the real
host be back out by now? I hope a giant didn’t get him. (to ASA) Thanks for joining us, Asa. I’ll just walk you
out. (to audience) We’ll now break for a commercial message. (Grabs ASA’s arm and hightails it out of there)
(optional: insert commercial or choral reading)
Scene 3

HOST 2: (stumbling onto the stage like someone shoved him) It looks like I’m still here so let’s welcome King
Asa’s son, King (looks at card, turns it sideways, manages to get out the name after a beat) Jehoshaphat.
(JEHOSHAPHAT enters while HOST 2 tries to stifle the giggles over the name) I guess because you were a prince
you didn’t get joked on about your name.
JEHOSHAPHAT: My name? What’s wrong with my name?
HOST 2: Jehosha FAT. (suppressed giggle) Anyone ever call you Jehoshefatty or anything?
JEHOSHAPHAT: No. But I was called crazy by some people when these three giagundous armies marched
against us.
HOST 2: (looking around in panic) Giants? (JEHOSHAPHAT shakes head “no” and HOST 2 is visibly relieved)
Just a big army? (JEHOSHAPHAT nods “yes”) Why did they call you nuts?
JEHOSHAPHAT: Instead of calling for archery practice, I called a prayer meeting at the temple.
HOST 2: Was it for all the fancy-smanchy preacher types while you practiced some sword fighting?
JEHOSHAPHAT: No. I had everybody come pray, all the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little
ones
HOST 2: How little?
JEHOSHAPHAT: (using his hands to indicate babies) Very little.
HOST 2: That’s …. Whack. What happened next?
JEHOSHAPHAT: I prayed.
HOST 2: What did you say?
JEHOSHAPHAT: “Lord God of our ancestors, You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are
in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” Then I said, “We have no power to face this vast army that is
attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
HOST 2: (aside to audience) I think I would have had my eyes on the nearest escape route. (to JEHOSHAPHAT)
Then what?
JEHOSHAPHAT: Then I reminded God he promised my great-great granddaddy Solomon that if disaster came
and we prayed at the temple, God had promised to hear us.

HOST 2: So then did you send out your best fighters? Put them at the front of your army?
JEHOSHAPHAT: No. I put singers in the front of the army.
HOST 2: Singers?!
JEHOSHAPHAT: Yup. They praised God and the Lord set ambushes against attacking army. They turned against
each other and wiped themselves out. It took us three days to collect all the armor, clothing and valuables.
HOST 2: Were you the last of the crazy (catching himself) I mean weird warrior kings?
JEHOSHAPHAT: I prefer the term prayer warrior, but no, I wasn’t the last. King Hezekiah followed in my
footsteps. (JEHOSHAPHAT gets up, walks to almost offstage taking big, funny looking steps. As he returns to his
seat, HEZEKIAH follows him in, walking in his footsteps, literally.)
HOST 2: You must be Hezekiah.
HEZEKIAH: I am.
HOST 2: Did anyone call you Hezzy the hesitator?
HEZEKIAH: No, when trouble came I took it straight to God.
HOST 2: Did you do something whack like put singers in the front of your army?
HEZEKIAH: No, but when a huge army surrounded my city, I prayed.
HOST 2: What did you say?
HEZEKIAH: I said, “Lord, the God of Israel, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have
made heaven and earth. Now, Lord our God, deliver us, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you
alone, Lord, are God.”
HOST 2: Did the attacking army fight itself?
HEZEKIAH: Not this time. That night the angel of the Lord wiped them out for us.
HOST 2: One angel wiped out an entire army! Wow!
HEZEKIAH: God answers warrior’s prayers when they trust in Him.
HOST 2: Wow! I think I’m finally getting the idea of what a prayer warrior really is. (Does a couple of crazy
karate moves, hands in blade position, ending with his hands together as he drops to his knees in prayer)
Optional: end with choral reading.

Jesus the Prayer Warrior

CHARACTERS: Host 3 (normal host), Peter, Andrew
PROPS: none
SETTING: TV studio
RUN TIME: 3 minutes
SCRIPTURE/BASED ON: Luke 5:16, 6: 12-13; Matthew 19:13-14, John 11; Hebrews 5:7

HOST 3: Welcome to the show, Andrew and Peter. Today’s topic is Jesus: an insider’s look. We all know Jesus
the teacher and Jesus the miracle worker, but what can you tell us about his prayer life?

PETER: Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

ANDREW: Jesus prayed before big decisions.

PETER: He spent a night praying on a mountainside before he chose his twelve apostles.

ANDREW: He prayed before miracles too. I remember bringing a boy with 5 loaves and fish to him when we had
thousands of hungry people to feed.

PETER: Jesus thanked God for those five loaves of bread and two small fish, and then fed well over 5000 people
with that tiny amount of food.

HOST 3: I guess that’s why we pray before meals.

ANDREW: Another time we were at Mary and Martha’s, four days after Lazarus died.

PETER: Jesus prayed, thanking God for always hearing his prayers.

ANDREW: Only after praying did he command, “Lazarus, come out!”

PETER: And Lazarus did – alive! It was amazing!

HOST 3: So prayer preceded the miracles? (ANDREW and PETER nod “yes””)

ANDREW: We got in trouble once for interrupting his prayers.

HOST 3: What happened?

ANDREW: People brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them.

PETER: But some of us tried to chase the kids away. Jesus wouldn’t have any of that.

ANDREW: He said to let the children come to him.

HOST 3: Did he ever pray for you?

PETER: Yes, but I am ashamed to admit I slept through most of it.

ANDREW: It was in the Garden of Gethsemane. He prayed for us twelve because he knew he was leaving us.

PETER: He also prayed for you.

HOST 3: For me? I wasn’t even born.

ANDREW: He prayed that night for anyone who would ever believe in him.

PETER: I realized after, he was praying before the biggest test he would ever face.

HOST 3: The crucifixion?

PETER: Yes. Jesus prayed his whole life, sometimes with tears, like he did that night.

ANDREW: God heard his prayers because of his reverent submission.

HOST 3: Including submitting to death on a cross.

PETER: In our places.

HOST 3: Anything else you’d like to add?

PETER: Pray on all occasions, about everything

ANDREW: Big things, little things, yourself and others.

LEADER 1: How should we pray?

ALL: Like Jesus taught his followers
(Optional: insert the Lord’s Prayer; with or without audience participation)
LEADER 2: When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
ALL: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others.
LEADER 1: Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
LEADER 2: But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.
ALL: Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
LEADER 1: When you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans,
ALL: for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
LEADER 2: Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Choral reading 3

PAUL: I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people
ALL: For kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness
PAUL: This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
ALL: who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
PAUL: For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind,
ALL: the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.
PAUL: Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

Choral reading 4

PAUL: The first thing I want you to do is pray.

ALL: Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.
PAUL: Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well
ALL: so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation.
PAUL: This is the way our Savior God wants us to live.
ALL: He wants not only us but everyone saved, you know, everyone to get to know the truth we’ve learned:
PAUL: There’s one God and only one, and one Priest-Mediator between God and us
ALL: Jesus, who offered himself in exchange for everyone held captive by sin, to set them all free.
PAUL: Since prayer is at the bottom of all this, what I want mostly is for men to pray
ALL: Not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God.
