Unit Plan

Title: Seed Stories Summative evaluation(s): Oral Presentation Subject: ELA

Introduction

• The teachers will read Fireflies by Julie Brinckloe to the class and together they will identify the story parts (characters, setting, etc.), focussing on the
feelings in the story.

Lesson 1

• The teacher will then introduce the concept of seed stories: a specific instance usually linked to a strong emotion (e.g. the moment you open your present).
Showing examples of personal seed stories, the teacher will model what students will be expected to do.
• In groups, students will practice identifying whether a story is a seed story, a slice or a watermelon story using props

Lesson 2

• Students will receive the same worksheet as the one used to model seed stories and will have to draw their own seed stories for each emotion (no words
allowed except speech bubbles).

Lesson 3 (might take up to three lessons)

• The teacher will introduce storyboards to students (see presentation) and explain that stories can be told with words. The teacher will model deconstructing
a seed story using the different story parts learned.
• Students will then pick one of the seed stories from their brainstorm and develop it using the different story parts (worksheet).

Lesson 4

• After looking at the rubric, students will work in pairs to practice telling their seed stories. The groups will conference with the teacher to receive additional
feedback (tip: focus on adding sensory details). Here is an example of feedback given to a student.

Summative Evaluation

• Students will present their seed story in front of the class. They may have the story board and feedback notes to help (rubric)
