Learning Outcomes

1. Apply hydrologic analyses to engineering designs


2. Describe the process of evapotranspiration and perform quantitative analyses on
meteorological and environmental data to compute evapotranspiration
3. Describe precipitation measurements and perform quantitative analyses on
precipitation to be used in engineering designs
4. Analyse the frequency and regime characteristics of streamflow
5. Explain and use the different methods used in the measurement of streamflow
6. Describe and perform quantitative analyses on processes that control runoff and
stream-flow at the catchment scale
7. Describe and explain groundwater systems. Application and evaluation of methods to
determine groundwater flow through Darcy’s law

Course Structure
Introduction to hydrology; the hydrological cycle; Meteorological data; Evaporation and
transpiration; Infiltration and percolation; Surface run-off; Hydrograph analysis; Flood
routing; Groundwater; Hydrological forecasting.
