As a Filipino Millennial, my moral decision making belongs to the ethical

framework called Utilitarianism, developed by John Stuart Mill. Utilitarianism is

more focused on the end result and as to how many people would bene t from the
action. In utilitarian ethics, it would also not matter if an action was done with evil
or negative means, just as long as it produces the greatest happiness to the most
number of people

Utilitarianism also falls under the category of morality that is labeled as

consequentialist. A consequentialist theory strives to answer questions such as
"What good will come from doing this," What bene ts can one get in performing
such actions?" These questions are indeed proof that this framework's primary
concern is just the result of your action as no action in itself can be considered
good nor bad, right or wrong, apart from its outcome or end result

Personally, I am not too fond of the idea of pain, especially if I am the one
in icting it on signi cant others. That is why I agree with this Ethical framework
as it also strives to avoid any pain and suffering in performing an action, and the
only goal is to achieve and give happiness and pleasure to many people

To give a much clearer idea as to how this framework can be applied in a particular
situation that could be present in one's day to day life, I would like to present two
concrete examples.

The rst example, a doctor who works in a war zone is facing with a dilemma as
four people, one civilian who suffers from a heart attack, needs an emergency
operation to survive and three other soldiers who are greatly wounded from the
battle and they all need to have organ transplant immediately, The one civilian,
however, is found to be a good match for all the three wounded soldiers. When
faced with this kind of situation, someone who is a utilitarian would choose to save
the three wounded soldiers by sacri cing the civilian by making him or her the
donor for the soldiers. If the utilitarian framework were to be observed in
determining whether the action or decision done by the doctor was moral or
immoral, It would always be moral as saving the three soldiers would guarantee
that three families would also be happy and would not suffer any grief

The second example would be you happen to have witnessed that your best friend's
husband is cheating on her. Take into consideration that your best friend is still
studying and preparing for her licensure examination to become a CPA Lawyer,
which will be just a week or two from now; also, she and her husband are raising
ve kids. As a utilitarian, you are concerned that this news would signi cantly
affect her focus on studying and passing the upcoming examination. Also, it would
cause heartbreak not only to her but also to her children, and so you decide to keep
it a secret instead
