We follow Option 1 of the Language Policy of the University of Stellenbosch in this module –
Parallel English and Afrikaans lectures / practicals / tutorials.
NOTE: The information in this document is (as far as possible) complete and correct. Any changes
to this information, as well as any additional information, will be announced on SUNLearn. You
may not plead ignorance if announcements have been placed! It is therefore in your own interest
to go onto SUNLearn on a regular basis.
1. The chemical building blocks of life (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids), as
well as the construction and functioning of biological membranes.
2. How a cell is structurally adapted to orchestrate the great variety of life processes in an
orderly fashion.
3. The way in which all living cells oxidise “energy-rich” substances with the production of
useable energy (ATP) for life processes.

4. The conservation of genetic information in DNA and the transfer of this information from
one cell generation to the next, as well as patterns determining the inheritance of genetic
information. The genetic code and processes such as replication, transcription and
translation are also covered.
5. The evidence of evolution as an ongoing process, as well as the origin of species.
This module provides general background necessary for further study in all of the Biological
Programmes that you may follow in later years.
Assessment
The module is assessed through 2 scheduled written tests on the subject matter of Sub-modules
1, 2 and 3. The combined mark of the two tests will provide a Test Mark. Further assessment
involves tests during lectures, practicals/tutorials and/or tests/assignments on SUNLearn. The
combined marks of these assessments contribute to the Practical Mark. The Test Mark and
Practical Mark are used in a ratio of 60:40 to yield the Class Mark (Predicate). Failure to complete
assessments and practical assignments will result in a “module not completed”. This means that
you will not qualify for the examination and will have to repeat the module in 2021.
Final assessment involves an examination on the full course content, including the practicals /
tutorials. The test and examination papers will each contain a variety of question types. We
strive to not have more than 50% of the questions in multiple-choice format. The Examination
Mark and Class Mark will be taken in a 60:40 ratio to determine the Final Mark. Further details
on assessment follow later in this document.

Outcomes
The module is designed to provide a sound knowledge and understanding of the most important
biological concepts at cellular level. A knowledge and understanding of evolution as an ongoing
process is also established. Certain generic skills are acquired during the practicals. Emphasis is
placed on light microscopy as a method of observation and interpretation of what is observed.
Drawing techniques are also incorporated. Certain basic laboratory techniques in Biochemistry
and Genetics are also touched upon. Reading skills and the sensible use of the text book are also
acquired.

5. Availability of lecturers
The Course Coordinator, Administrative Official and the most lecturers maintain an open-door
policy regarding consultations. However, some lecturers may prefer specific consultation
periods. This will be announced by the lecturer(s) involved. You may, of course, make an
appointment with a lecturer for a specific time.

9. Practicals / Tutorials
THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLIES TO ALL THREE THE BIOLOGY-MODULES IN THE FIRST AND
SECOND SEMESTERS: ALL PRACTICALS / TUTORIALS ARE COMPULSORY!
a) The division of the class into practical groups and laboratories will be done before the
first week. Please see the notice boards and SUNLearn for details.
e) The BioExcel Programme will be run weekly in conjunction with the practical component.
Attendance is compulsory for all students assigned to the BioExcel Programme. The rule
below also applies to the BioExcel Programme.
f) If you have missed a practical / tutorial or a BioExcel session without a valid reason
and supported by relevant documentation, a “module not completed” will be awarded
to you. This means that you do not qualify for the examination and you will have to
repeat the module in 2021.

10. Absence
If, due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. illness), you are unable to attend a test or
practical/tutorial, you must hand in an original verifying document (e.g. a valid medical
certificate) to the Administrative Official (Mrs Carrin Nel, room 1093, Natural Sciences building).
This must be done within seven calendar days of the date of absence. If you also need the
document for other modules you must supply the original and a copy. The copy will be retained
by the Official. A medical certificate connected to the absence from an assessment (with the
exception of modules that are assessed in terms of the examinations policy) or to the late
submission of an academic assignment, will only be considered if it has been issued within 24
hours from the time the assessment occurred or the submission date of an academic assignment
(unless the certificate explicitly states why it could not be issued within 24 hours). No student
will be allowed to do the Sickness Test if the medical certificate has not been submitted within
the deadline. Other reasons for absence will be handled according to the general regulations of
the University. Doubtful cases will be referred to the Registrar’s Office for a decision. (See SU
CALENDAR, GENERAL 2020, Part 1, p. 115 - 118).

c) Short, unannounced tests may be given at any time during lectures or practicals /
tutorials. These tests will cover work done during the previous practical, as well as
relevant material from lectures. Marks may also be awarded for practical reports and
other possible tests/assignments; also on SUNLearn. All these marks contribute to your
Practical Mark. Failure to complete these practical assignments will result in a “module
not completed”. This means that you will not qualify for the examination and will have
to repeat the module in 2021.
d) June Examination:
i. First Opportunity: Friday, 29 May 2020 (14:00).
ii. Second Opportunity: Saturday, 20 June 2020 (14:00).
You can choose which of the 2 examination opportunities you want to write but we
would strongly advise you to use the first opportunity.
The Examination will deal with the full contents (including the practicals / tutorials) of
Biology 124.
b) A Class Mark of 40% or more will allow your entry into the final examination. Following
the examination, your Final Mark will be calculated as follows:
d) If your Final Mark is less than 50%, but at least 40%, you may write the Second
Examination Opportunity on 20 June 2020. You pass if:
i. your examination mark is 50% or higher, or
ii. Your final mark is 50% or higher.

The module is based on the prescribed international textbook of Russell, Hertz, McMillan and
Benington (Cengage Learning), Biology: The Dynamic Science, 5th edition. The module
outline features the relevant page numbers for each section. Use your textbook to supplement
the lectures and lecture notes. Also, the relevant self-study questions in the textbook and in
the module outline will be very helpful to test your concept knowledge and understanding of
the material covered in the course.

EVOLUTION: MODULE OUTLINE
The evolution course covers Chapters 20-24 in the prescribed handbook, Russell, Hertz, McMillan
and Benington (5th edition). We work directly out of the handbook, but will introduce numerous
interesting examples to illustrate our points in the lectures. The handbook is the key to the course
and the lectures explain how the lock works.
