Medical textile can be defined as fibre based products or structures used for first aid or the clinical treatment
of a wound or medical condition.
It is a highly specialized and bio compatible technical textile, used for medical and hygiene application
called ‘MEDTECH’.
It is a combination of textile technology and medical science. In the field of medical application, technical
textiles are not just used in contact with skin, but also fulfill important functions within the body (intra-
corporal applications like implants). Technical textiles offer medical and hygiene industry with unparalleled
protection, comfort and cost saving. It has become possible only due to development of new yarns and
manufacturing technologies of yarn and fabric.
At the beginning of using medical textiles, it could be used as an antimicrobial material but nowadays
medical textiles are using as smart material. For use as a cardiac supporting device, it acts as smart
materials.
Such kind of application is used as a medical textile for smart materials. Generally, nanofiber-based fabric
are using to produce this fabric.
Smart medical textiles are used also drug delivery dressing applications, smart bandage and clusters. It is
also applicable for the respiratory system, neural activity, thermoregulation, physiotherapy process. Optical
based smart medical fabrics are used to environment measuring. So it is said that medical textiles based
smart material are playing a vital role in the smart material industry.
1. Non-plantable medical textile: Use as wound dressing, plaster, bandage, gauge etc.
2. Implantable medical textile: Use as suture, artificial ligament, artificial joint etc.
3. Extracorporeal device: Use as artificial kidney, artificial liver, artificial lungs etc.
4. Health care and hygiene product: Use as bedding and pillow cover in hospital, surgical gown,
surgical musk, gloves etc.
MEDICAL TEXTILE PRODUCTS :
Hollow viscose
Application: Artificial liver
Function: Separate and dispose of patients' plasma and supply fresh plasma .
1. Bio-degradable textile: fibers which are absorbed by the body within 2-3 month after implantation are
called bio-degradable medical textile. These are- cotton, viscose, polyamide, polyurethane, collagen,
alginate, polypropiolacton.
2. Non-bio degradable medical textile: Fibers that are absorbed by the body slowly and take more than 6
month time to degrade are called non-bio degradable medical textile. Non-bio degradable medical textiles
are polypropylene, PTFE and carbon.
TYPES OF MEDICAL TEXTILE :
Nano-technique has acquired tremendous impulse in the last decade. Nano-fibre based products, as well as
nano-coated materials, are present innovations in the field of medicine. So, in our technical poster, we have
gone through the latest medical textiles, nano-based products due to the following features and a wide range
of applications.
Nanofibres are very attracted due to their unique properties, high surface area to volume ratio, film thinness,
nanoscale fiber diameter porosity of structure, lighter weight. Nanofibres are porous and the distribution of
pore size could be of wide range, so they can be considered as engineered scaffolds with broad application
in the field of tissue engineering. Some other applications like wound dressings, bone regeneration and
nanofibres to be the carrier of various drugs to the specific sites, etc.
The US market for medical textiles are increasing day by day. A recent report showed that the global
medical textiles market will reach 23.3 billion within 2025. On the basis of the fabric, the non-woven fabrics
market has high demand because of its disposability in contagious diseases. On the other hand, it is a low-
cost price taker. Woven fabrics are very much dimensional stable but they are low extensive. The latest
technology are invented by mainly knitted structure.
