Rivets are becoming obsolete due to their limitations. These are preferred only when a simple connection with a small moment‐resistance is desired. Normally, it has been found economical to use bolts or welded connections in the shop and bolted connection in the field. Sotνed Fybnqmft — Note Assume grade of steel Fe 410, if not specified. Example 6.1 Two plates of 16 mm and 14 mm thickness are to be joined by a groove weld as shown in Fig. Ex. 6.1. The joint is subjected to a factored tensile force of 430 kN . Due to some reasons the effective length of the weld that could be provided was 175 mm only. Check the safety of the joint if (a) Single‐V groove weld is provided (b) Double‐V groove weld is provided. Assume the plates to be shop welded. Solution For Fe 410 grade steel, f y =250 MPa . (a) In case of single‐V groove weld, incomplete penetration of weld takes place; therefore as per the specifications, Throat thickness, t e = 5 t= 5 ×14=8.75 mm 8 8 For shop weld: partial safety factor for material γ mw =1.25 Effective length of the weld, l w =175 mm fy 2.50 Strength of the weld, T dw =l w t e =175× 8.75 × ×1 0−3 γ mw 125 ¿ 306.25 kN < 430 kN which is inadequate. (b) In the case of double‐V groove weld, complete penetration of the weld takes place; therefore as per the specifications, throat thickness, t e =¿ thickness of thinner plate ¿ 14 mm fy Strength of the weld, T dw =l w t e γ mw 2.50 ¿ 175 ×14 × ×1 0−3=4 90 kN 125 ¿ 430 kN Fig. Ex. 7,2 which is adequate and safe. Example 6.3 A groove weld is to connect two plates 180 mm ×18 mm each. Determine the design bending strength of the joint, if it is subjected to a moment of 13 kNm. Also, determine the adequacy of the joint if the shear force at the joint is 200 kN . Assume the welds to be of double‐U shop welded.
