TENSION MEMBER

Problem 1: A W 250 x 167 is used as tension member and the web is connected to a two
gusset plates by 16 mm bolts as shown in Figure ST – 008. Compute the effective net area
if the shear lag factor is computed using

1. the general formula

2. the alternative value

x 80 80

PL 12 mm x 180 mm
Properties of W 250 x 167:

A = 21,200 mm2 d = 290 mm bf = 264 mm tf = 31.8 mm tw = 19.2 mm x = 22.8 mm

Figure ST – 008

NOTE: for Problem 3, refer to table 3.5.

Problem 2: A W 150 x 24 is used as a tension member of a truss is connected by means

of 2 – 10 mm plates as shown on Figure ST – 009. The connection uses 8 mm bots with
the holes diameter is 2 mm larger than the bolt diameter. Shear lag factor U = 0.85. The
member carries a service dead load of 180 kN and a service live load of 110 kN. Assume
the gusset plate is strong enough to carry the load. Use Fy = 250 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa.

Properties of W 150 x 24:

A = 3,060 mm2 d = 160 mm bf = 102 mm tf = 10.3 mm tw = 6.6 mm
