Assignment - Tension Member – Session 2019

Q. No. 1: Determine the design and allowable strength in tension for a single channel C 380x74
connected to a 15 mm thick gusset plate as shown in Fig.1. Assume that the holes are
for 20 mm diameter rivet. Steel is A36.

Q. No. 2: Determine the design strength by LRFD and allowable strength by ASD of a truss
diagonal member L102x76x9.5 which is loaded in tension and is attached with the top
chord member of truss using three 15 mm diameter rivets as shown in Fig.2. Steel is
A36.

Q. No. 3: A single L152x152x25.4 is used as a tension member (brace) in a multistory building.

One leg of the angle is attached to a gusset plate with a single line of 20mm rivets.
Determine the shear lag factor and effective net area for three rivets with a spacing of
75mm.

Q. No. 4: An angle section L102x76x9.5 is attached to a gusset plate with four 20mm rivets spaced
at 75mm with end and edge distance of 40mm as shown in Figure 3. Determine the
available design and allowable block shear strength of this angle. Steel is A36.

Q. No. 5: Calculate the design strength and allowable strength of tension member C380x60 of A36
steel. The member is 6m long and is connected through flanges only. Assume there can
be as many as two 15mm diameter rivets at any one cross section (one in each flange).
Take U=0.75.

Q. No. 6: For the two lines of rivet holes shown in Fig.4, determine the stagger ‘s’ which will give a
net area at failure path DEFG equal to net area along the path ABC. Diameter of rivet is
20 mm.

Q. No. 7: Calculate the factored tensile load capacity of W200x86 section of A36 steel according to
AISC-LRFD specifications. The member is 9m long and is connected through flanges
only. Assume there can be as many as four 20mm rivets at any one cross section (two in
each flange).

Q. No. 8: Design a 3.5m long single angle tension member to support a live load of 220 kN and a
dead load of 75 kN. The member is to be connected through one leg only and only one
bolt hole will occur at any cross section. Use A36 steel. Design by (a) LRFD and (b) ASD.

Q. No. 9: Design a W360 tension member for a truss that will carry a dead load of 395 kN and a live
load of 1100 kN. The length of the member is 4 m. The flanges will be bolted to the
connecting plates with 22 mm bolts located so that four bolts will occur in any net section.
Use A36 steel and design by (a) LRFD and (b) ASD.

Q. No. 10: Select a double angle [equal leg] tension member of A36 steel for use as a web member
in a truss and determine the maximum area reduction that would be permitted for holes
and shear lag. The member must carry a LRFD required strength Tu = 2000 kN.

Q. No. 11: Design a W200 tension member for a truss that will carry a service dead load of 400 kN
and a service live load of 900 kN. The length of the member is 3.0 m. The flanges will be
connected to the connecting plates with 20 mm rivets located so that four bolts will occur
in any net section. Use A36 steel and design by LRFD method. Take U = 0.70.
