Assignment II

Design of Permanent and Non-Permanent Joints

Submission Date: January 22, 2024

1) A vertical channel 152 × 76 (see Table A–7) as shown in Figure 1 has a cantilever beam bolted to it as shown
in figure 4. The channel is hot-rolled AISI 1006 steel. The bar is of hot-rolled AISI 1015 steel. The shoulder
bolts are M12 × 1.75 ISO 5.8. For a design factor of 2.8, find the safe force F that can be applied to the
cantilever.

2) The bracket shown in Figure 2 is to support a total load (equally divided between the two sides) of 60kN.
Using E60 series welding rod and a safety factor of 3.0, what size weld should be specified?

3) Shown in Figure 3 a 15- by 200-mm rectangular steel bar cantilevered to a 250-mm steel channel using four
tightly fitted bolts located at A, B, C, and D. Determine the size of Bolts.

4) Find the total shear load on each of the three bolts for the connection shown in the Figure 4 and compute the
significant bolt shear stress and bearing stress. Find the second moment of area of the 8 mm plate on a section
through the three bolt holes, and find the maximum bending stress in the plate.

5) A beam of rectangular cross section shown in Figure 5 is welded to a support by means of fillet welds as
shown in Determine the size of the welds, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to 75 N/mm2.

Figure 5

6) Figure 6 shows a vertically loaded bracket attached to a fixed member by three identical bolts. Although the
24 kN load is normally applied in the center, the bolts are to be selected on the basis that the load eccentricity

shown could occur. Because of safety considerations, SAE class 9.8 steel bolts and a minimum safety factor
of 6 (based on proof strength) are to be used.
a) Select bolts for the bracket attachment assuming shear load carried by friction.
b) Select bolts for the bracket attachment neglecting friction and assuming shear forces are
carried by the bolts.

7) A crane-runway bracket is fastened to the roof truss by means of two identical bolts as shown in Figure 7.
Determine the size of the bolts, if the permissible tensile stress in the bolts is limited to 75 N/mm2.

8) A steel plate subjected to a force of 5 kN and fixed to a channel by means of three identical rivets is shown in
Figure 8. The bolts are made from plain carbon steel 45C8 (Sy = 380 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 3.
Specify the size of bolts.

9) A wall bracket is attached to the wall by means of four identical bolts, two at A and two at B, as shown in
Figure 9. Assuming that the bracket is held against the wall and prevented from tipping about the point C by
all four bolts and using an allowable tensile stress in the bolts as 35 N/mm2.
Determine the size of the bolts on the basis of DE theory.

10) A bracket, attached to a vertical column by means of four identical rivets, is subjected to an eccentric force of
25 kN as shown in Figure 10. Determine the diameter of rivets, if the permissible shear stress is 60 N/mm2.

Figure 10
11) A riveted joint, consisting of two identical rivets, is subjected to an eccentric force of 15 kN as shown in
Figure 11. Determine the diameter of rivets, if the permissible shear stress is 60 N/mm2.

Figure 11
12) Two plates, each 5 mm thick, are connected by means of four rivets as shown in Figure 12. The permissible
stresses for rivets and plates in tension, shear and compression are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm2 respectively.
Calculate: a) diameter of the rivets; b) width of the plate; and c) efficiency of the joint.
