LIST OF STEPS ON HOW TO USE THE ASSESSMENT TOOL

Materials used for assessment: worksheet 1 (KNOW YOUR ALPHABETS), Worksheet


2 (know your alphabets), Worksheet 3 (CONNECT THE DOTS) , Worksheet 4 (connect the
dots) and Worksheet 5 (Understanding Alphabet)

1. Teacher may use this checklist only during and after the lesson.
2. This assessment should be carried out with one pupil at a time
3. The duration for this assessment is about 15-20 minutes.
4. Teacher fills in the details of the pupils in the worksheet before conducting the
assessment (Pupils name, class, date of assessment)
5. Teacher proceeds to the assessment by referring to the components included in the
criteria that needs to be assessed.
6. Teacher needs to evaluate students based on their ability to complete the task
according to the category/items in the checklist (1, Very Good /2, Average/ 3, Below
Average) by referring to the rubrics given in the final page..

Focus 1: Fine Motor Skills


7. Firstly, teacher will distribute a pencil to pupil.
8. The teacher will ask the pupil to hold the pencil and write the upper-case of the letter
C in the worksheet 1 (KNOW YOUR ALPHABETS).
9. Teacher observes the way the pupils are hold the pencil and writing the alphabet.
Teacher also observes the way the child grips the pencil.
10. Teacher record the ability of pupils in the checklist.

Focus 2: Writing letters


11. Secondly, since teacher has already distributed Worksheet 1, teacher will ask pupil to
continue with the worksheet after reading the instruction.
12. Teacher observes each upper-case letter written by pupil.
13. Teacher records the outcome of pupil in writing in the checklist.
14. Next, teacher distributes Worksheet 2 (know your alphabets to pupils.
15. Teacher ask pupil to read the instruction correctly and answer the worksheet.
16. Teacher observes each lower-case letter written by pupil one-by-one.
17. Teacher records the outcome in the checklist accurately.

Focus 3: Knowing the sequence of letters


18. Teacher distributes worksheet 3 (CONNECT THE DOTS!) to pupil.
19. Teacher ask pupil to read the instruction well.
20. Teacher ask pupil to answer the worksheet.
21. Teacher observes if pupils connect the upper-case letters in the correct sequence
and if desired dinosaur image is formed.
22. Teacher records the pupil’s ability to identify upper-case letters and sequence them
correctly in the checklist.
23. Later, teacher distributes worksheet 4 (connect the dots!) to pupil.
24. Teacher ask pupil to read the instruction well while teacher emphasizes the bold
word on the instruction.
25. Teacher ask pupil to connect the dots.
26. Teacher observes if pupils connect the dots that consist of lower-case letters in
sequence.
27. Teacher records the outcome in the checklist.

Focus 4: Knowing the upper-case and lower-case for each alphabet.


28. Teacher distributes worksheet 5 (Understanding Alphabet) to pupil.
29. Teacher ask pupil to read the instruction given properly.
30. Teacher explains the example given for the alphabet A.
31. Teacher ask students to answer the worksheet.
32. Teacher observes if the pupil is writing the right case of letter into the box.
33. Teacher records the outcome in the checklist.
