Conclusion
What is SHEAR WALL?
 Vertical plate-like RC walls
 Start at foundation level and are continuous
throughout the building height

Why SHEAR WALL is

provided?
■ Structural member used to resist lateral
forces
■ Provide strength and stiffness to control
lateral displacements
■ Minimum thickness - 150mm, Maximum
thickness - 400mm in high rise buildings

CORE TYPE SHEAR WALLS stronger and more ductile

SIMPLE RECTANGULAR TYPE
Two structural walls are
joined together by
COUPLED WALLS relatively short spandrel
beams
RIGID FRAME SHEAR WALLS

CORE TYPE SHEAR WALLS

SIMPLE RECTANGULAR TYPE

COUPLED WALLS - Provide greater lateral

rigidity
- Can build up to 20-25 floors
- Composed of braced panel
RIGID FRAME SHEAR WALLS (to counter the effect of
lateral loads)

SIMPLE RECTANGULAR TYPE - lateral & gravity loads are supported by core
- Eliminates column & bracing elements
- Core wall is provided around staircases or
lift wells

LOCATION OF SHEAR WALL IN A BUILDING
■ Located symmetrically to avoid ill effect of twisting
■ Can be located at exterior or interior
■ More effective when located along exterior perimeter
of building
Design Provision:
■ Step- 1: Review of the layout
■ Step-2: Determination of various loads
■ Step- 3: Estimation of earthquake design
force
■ Step-4: Analysis of the structural systems
■ Step- 5: Design for flexural strength
■ Step- 6: Design for shear strength
■ Step- 7: Detailing of reinforcement
BEHAVIOUR UNDER SEISMIC LOADING:

■ Depending on the height to width

(H/D) ratio , a shear wall may be
behave as a slender wall a squat wall
or a combination of two.
■ Squat wall show significant amount
of shear deformation as compared to
bending deformation.
■ In slender wall primary mode of
deformation is bending. Shear
deformation are small and can be
neglected.
Advantages
Conclusion
1. Energy dissipation capability & high
stiffness.
Effective building element in
2. Provide strength & stiffness in direction resisting lateral forces
of orientation

3. Reduces lateral sway

Larger stiffness
4. Easy construction & implementation Damages can be minimized
5. It is more resistant to Earthquake.

6. Efficient in terms of construction cost
