I. FAMILY STRUCTURE, CHARACTERISTICS AND DYNAMICS

The interview was conducted in Brgy. Mandog, Maasin, Iloilo on October 24, 2020
around 2 pm with Mrs. Lourdes Sumagaysay, the wife of Mr. Arnold Sumagaysay and a
mother to their two (2) daughters. They are all living together consisting of four (4)
members in the family, includes Mr. Sumagaysay, Mrs. Sumagaysay and with their two
(2) daughters, Ms. A.M and Mistress A.F. Sumagaysay Family is a typical nuclear type
of family. In terms of decision making, sometimes Mr. Sumagaysay, the head of the
family, decides for the good of all but most of the time, the decision is made by both of
them of what’s best for their children especially in budgeting and for the health of each
family member. Mr. and Mrs. Sumagaysay don’t have a hard time in terms of decision
making but they can’t avoid little arguments which are a natural part of a relationship.
Each of them tends to consider each other’s opinion first before coming up with the final
decision especially in regards with budgeting and health matters. Mr. Sumagaysay is
the head and breadwinner of the family while Mrs. Sumagaysay takes care of the
household chores and their children. The family members are close with each other.

II. SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS

Mr. Sumagaysay was fortunate enough to step into college but didn’t finish his degree.
It is still seems to be an obstacle for Mr. Sumagaysay to get a good job especially this
time of crisis. Mr. Sumagaysay’s job right now is a delivery truck driver and that serves
as the source of their income. On the other hand, Mrs. Sumagaysay was still fortunate
enough to finish high school but decided to stay at home to be a full-time housewife and
to take good care of their children. Their oldest daughter is on her 9 th grade and the
youngest is on kindergarten. Their family’s daily income and expenses is approximately
more or less P300, just enough to buy for their daily needs. Mrs. Sumagaysay stated
upon estimation, their monthly income is approximately P5,000 or more per month.
Their monthly income can cover their monthly electricity bill, food, personal necessities
and allowances. Fortunately, the sister of her husband is also helping them with their
financial needs. Sumagaysay family is an Ilonggo. In terms of religion, they are Roman
Catholics and they go to church every Sunday. The family is participating in the general

assembly and fiesta of their barangay to be as active and involved as they can be. They
have a good relationship with their neighbors.

III. HOME AND ENVIRONMENT

Their house is made up of wood and light materials. The house only has 1 room and the
family sleeps together in a bamboo floor with foam. The living space is adequate for the
family. They are also comfortable with it since they are only 4 of them in the house.
They wear foot wears like slippers to protect their feet from foreign materials since their
floor is not cemented. The house is well ventilated because of the air that comes in their
house and also they are surrounded by trees and field but it is inadequate in lighting.
Mrs. Sumagaysay doesn’t have any problems concerning the electricity. In terms of
water supply, from the steam pump of their neighbor, there is a pipe that connects to
their house. It is approximately 15 meters away from their house. The water they get
from there is used for washing of dishes and clothes, bathing and personal hygiene and
necessities. For drinking, they sterilized the water from the steam pump or sometimes,
they buy water from the water station. They have their own toilet facility and septic tank
for the drainage system. The family does general cleaning once a week. Breeding sites
for mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, and rodents are inevitable due to sugar cane fields
and tall grasses beside their house and poor environmental sanitation. The garbage is
disposed everyday to the compost pit they made and burned the garbage there but it is
not properly dispose and well-manage. Their house is near the road so it is prone to
accidents. Tricycle and jeepney is the means of transportation of the family. They have
their personal phone for communication and school purposes for their children. They
live in a rural area. Their neighborhood is kind and helpful. For the health facilities, Mrs.
Sumagaysay stated that they have a barangay health clinic and Rural Health Unit within
their vicinity. Mrs. Sumagaysay stated that she doesn’t have any problems or discomfort
