Results table:

Vintial(cm3) VFinal(cm3) VRequired(cm3) aliquot (cm3)

10 1.8 8.2 1

10 1.9 8.1 2

10 2.1 7.9 3

1. Amount of HCl = 0.02dm3 x 1.00mol dm-3 = 0.02 mol HCl

2. Amount of NaOH = 0.100mol dm-3 ± 0.01mol dm-3 x 0.01dm-3 ± 0.001mol dm-3

= 0.001dm-3 ± 0.0002 dm-3

3. Unreacted HCl average = 1.93cm3 ± 0.04cm3 = 0.00193dm3 ± 0.00004dm3
Amount in mol = 0.00193dm ± 0.00004dm3 x 1.00mol dm-3 ± 0.01dm3 HCl
3

= 0.00193 ± 0.0000593 mol HCl

4. Moles per 10cm3 x 10 = 0.0193 ± 0.000593 mol HCl

5. Reacted HCl average = 8.07cm3 = 0.00807dm3 ± 0.00004dm3

Amount in mol = 0.00807dm3 ± 0.00004dm3 x 1.00mol dm-3 ± 0.01dm3 HCl
= 0.00807 ± 0.0000741 mol HCl

6. Moles of CaCO3 = 0.00404 ± 0.0000741 mol CaCO3

7. Mass of CaCO3 = 0.404g ± 0.00741 of CaCO3

8. (0.404g ± 0.00741) / 0.6 x 100 = 67.3 ± 1.25 %

Discussion:

The assumption that the eggshell is composed purely of CaCO3. This is an unlikely assumption
As the eggshell is made of many different compounds.another assumption is that the eggshell
has not reacted with any substances such as the amniotic fluid, or other similar substances. If
these assumptions are inaccurate then the data gathered is not very accurate or reliable and
this may range from a small inaccuracy to a massive inaccuracy depending on how true the
assumptions are. for example the amount of sodium hydroxide required for neutralization would
be different, either higher or lower.
