1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 A BRIEF HISTORY
On January 25, 1964, University of Oregon track athlete Phil Knight and his
coach, Bill Bowerman, formed Nike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports
(BRS).The company originally worked as a distributor for Japanese shoe
maker Onitsuka Tiger in Eugene, Oregon, making most sales on track
meetings from Knight's car. Otis Davis, a student athlete at the University of
Oregon said that his coach, Bowerman and Olympic gold medalist at the 1960
Summer Olympics, made the first pair of Nike shoes for him. However,
contradicting a report that they were made for Phil Knight. But Davis denying
the report and convince that the shoes was made for him. In the first year, BRS
sold 1,300 pairs of Japanese running shoes and achieve $8,000. By 1971,
Blue Ribbon Sport(RBS) decided to stand alone by ending the relationship with
Onitsuka Tiger and then make a preparation to launch its own line of footwear,
which was rebranded as Nike. In 1976, Nike hired John Brown and Partners,
as their first advertising agency. By 1980 the company went public in
December when Nike attained 50% market share in the U.S. athletic shoe
market. On 15th March 2018 at a company public announcement, Nike CEO
Mark Parker said that Trevor Edwards, Nike chief executive decided to resign
his position as Nike's brand president and retired in August. In October 2019,
John Donahoe was announced as the next CEO and stop selling in Amazon to
start focus more with customers.

1.2 SELL/PROVIDE
Sports Equipment
Nike focus more on sports equipment such as their first products were track
running shoes.They also manufacture shoes, shirts, skirts, cleats, baselayers,
and for a wide variety of sports at present, including track and field, baseball,
ice hockey, tennis, soccer union, lacrosse, basketball, and cricket. Nike Air
Max is a line of shoes first released by Nike. There are also Nike SB, Nike NYX
and Nike 6.0 designed for skateboarding. Not just that, Nike also has cricket
shoes called Air Zoom Yorker. Nike introduced a high-performance basketball
shoes called the Air Jordan XX3. Other than that, Nike offers a variety of items
for sporting events for men, women, and children such as association football,

including trainers and clothing., basketball, and cross training. For outdoor
sports such as car racing, aquatic activities, cheerleading, wrestling, volleyball,
cycling, American football, baseball, association football, skateboarding, golf,
tennis and other sporting and recreational uses. Nike also offers shoes.

Nike Vaporfly
The latest technical composition of the Vaporfly series has revolutionized
long-distance running as tests have shown that these shoes can increase
running times by up to 4.2 percent.

1.3 WHAT IS THE BRANDING OF THE COMPANY? ARE THEY TRYING TO


CONVEY A CERTAIN MESSAGE OR VALUE SET TO THEIR CUSTOMERS?
The branding of this company is Nike, their slogan is “Just Do It”.There are
sinister story of Nike's 'Just Do It' slogan, which was inspired by the last words
of a murderer named Gary Gilmore who killed two people in Utah (1976)
before he was executed. According to US Supreme Court records, Gary
Gilmore robbed and killed a gas station attendant, and then a motel worker.
The record shows that Gilmore shot himself in the hand in the process, and
fled to his cousin Brenda's for medical aid, but she turned him over to police.

In 1976 Gilmore was sentenced to death in October, and sent to Utah State
Prison. When he reached the end of death row three months later, on
17th January 1977, he was asked if he had any last words. Facing down a
five-man firing squad, Gilmore spontaneously said "Let's do it”. Dan Wieden,
the founder of ad agency Wieden and Kennedy, was inspired to adapt the
phrase to "Just Do It" for a 1988 TV ad which introduced the slogan to the

world. Overall, Just Do It is a perfect slogan to bring inspiration and innovation
to every athlete in the world.

3.0 ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION
3.1 EXPLAIN THE USE OF EACH SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM
INDIVIDUALLY
Currently, Nike uses 6 social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,
Linked In, Pinterest and Google Web.

3.1.1 FACEBOOK
Nike Facebook page currently has been followed by 35,399,490 people and
they get 34,637,027 hits of likes. There are 191,555 people checked in here.
On the Facebook page,has varied post like how people use Nike outfit in their
daily sports like. Not just that,there are also have scenery photo of sports,
events, videos, motivational quotes and inspiring hot movie stars like Kevin
Hart who into Nike sports. They posts like twice a week. Facebook has
messenger for people to chats but Nike do not use it to interact with customer.
They interact with customer by using other apps. However, they already stop
posting on Facebook on 28th January 2018.

3.1.2 INSTAGRAM
Nike had 2 instagram the first instagram named @nike is about inspiring posts.
Instagram page currently has 124 million followers with 773 posts.They share
multiple stories with photos, videos and IGTV in their instagram. They make a
post twice a week but make multiple posts in a single day. Their posts are very
interesting and inspiring especially to those who struggles to strive their best to
be healthy and fit. Next, the second instagram is instagram shop named
@nikesportswear. It has 8.1 million followers with 1107 posts .It is specifically
for customer to view all sports Nike items. They also pick random people who
wears Nike to do modelling as an inspiration for viewers. However people
seems more attract to the first instagram compared to second instagram. The
way Nike interact with the customer through Instagram is by post stories and
keep it as highlight.

3.1.3 TWITTER
Nike joined twitter on November 2011. Nike Twitter page currently has been
followed by 8.3 million people their pinned tweets currently on 23th October
2020, about You don’t need to be a star to have a
voice.#YouCan’tStopOurVoice. They post unconditionally. Sometimes 3 or 4
post a week. Overall for Nike twitter is about inspiring words and photos of
inspiring people like tennis player @RafaelNada

3.1.4 LINKED IN
Linked In briefly about opportunity for every member of the global workforce to
create economic. For example all Nike branch in the world connected together
in 1 application. Now Nike Linked In currently has 4,158,953 followers and total
of Nike employees that already registered in Linked In are 90,770 employees.
To know more about Nike, people can go to overview and for those who wants
to find jobs, Linked In is a perfect application to discover jobs. For example
Nike Linked In has listed vacancy in Nike shops from all over the world.

3.1.5 PINTEREST
Pinterest is more about sharing favourite photos but for Nike, there are sharing
shoes design and modelling photos in Nike outfit. They also do modelling of
pregnant woman wears sports outfit. When you discover Pins you love, save
them to boards to keep your ideas organized and easy to find.

3.1.6 NIKE WEB


Nike Web is specifically for Nike. Their mission is to drive to do everything
possible to expand human potential by creating groundbreaking sport
innovations, by making the products more sustainably, by building a creative
and diverse global team and by making a positive impact in communities
where people live and work. News, shop, outfit, price, clothing, and delivery is
all in 1 web. They always check the web. If there are any progressing
regarding new design, they will update the design in Nike Web on the first
place. So the easiest way to go through Nike brand is through the web.

3.2 EXPLAIN THE SOCIAL MEDIA USE AD A WHOLE
For six social media platforms that Nike use are slightly different infrequency
and purpose of use. Facebook and Instagram, social media platform are
effectively use to advertise or sharing an information on it. For twitter and
pinterest more to sharing quotes and brand to attract viewers. Then for Linked
In and Nike Web is focus more on Nike and branches stated to inform people.
These social medias, however have similarities as a whole in how they
advertise their upcoming travel package and services, event the social media
is hosted by the company like community work . They also post photo and
video the good scenery of sports spots. The photo that Nike post are all
uniques and exclusive because not all same photos and videos are post in all
social medias. The posts on Facebook ,Instagram, Twitter, Linked In, Pinterest
and Nike Web has its own styles. This way help netizens and the customers to
get more information of certain company. Nike treats its customers in a friendly
and graceful manner.

3.3 EXPLAIN THE COMPANY’S DIGITAL FOOTPRINT


3.3.1 FACEBOOK
There are six digital footprint of Nike company. The first one is Facebook. The
Facebook is simply named Nike which is the name of the company. As we
know Facebook able to builds technologies that give people the power to
connect with friends and family, find communities and grow businesses. The
power we are going to talk about is for instant when Nike company make a
post on Facebook the possibility for people to see the post is higher. It is
because Nike is a famous sports brand around the world and for sure they will
use business account to attract people to see the brand. This shown Facebook
business account can ease people to know more regarding the product. If they
unsatisfied with the information given, they can go to “about” to get further Nike
information. From the picture in 2.1.1. Nike Facebook shows that the company
get 34,638,754 likes. To be more interesting Facebook will inform if your
Facebook friends like the company’s page too. Thus, instead of find the
information about Nike in Facebook, you will have the audacity to ask your
Facebook friends. However, they are only 191,554 people checked in Nike

Facebook which means Nike company is less famous in Facebook. Probably
because people preception on Facebook as old school.

3.3.2 INSTAGRAM
From 2.1.2, you can tell that Nike company has two instagram.The first
instagram named Nike is more about how was life is going with Nike. They
focus more on spotlighting stories and shoes stories. The company also stick a
link in bio to go direct to web nike.com. They also state the address of the
company. From 124 million followers, we can tell that Nike is a well known
sports company. Althought instagram provides business account, people are
more tend to see photo and video about Nike sharing in social networking
service because as a viewer and a customer I am strongly agree that I like to
see the function and design of certain products. Since Nike has two Instagram,
the second instagram named nikesportswear is a perfect social media to
window shopping sports item. Since there are so many photos and videos in
Instagram, the best part of Instagram digital footprint is you can save the
photos or videos that you like without vanish and it will appear on you
instagram saved.

3.3.3 TWITTER
On twitter since Nike is a worldwide company,they has 9 account for twitter
such as @NikeFootball, @NikeBasketball, and @NikeGolf . These accounts
are more likely to expose about their company progressing and events. It is an
interesting way to be spontaneous and friendly with netizens by tweet stories
regarding the Nike company. If it's happening anywhere, it's happening on
Twitter. For example, if you wants to know more about Nike in football sports,
you can visit @NikeFootball twitter account. This is clearly shows that Nike is
famous among football player like Cristiano Ronaldo. Then people will be
interest in Nike. Twitter also have messages for people to text each other but
people are more excited in share and scroll people stories or achievement by
tweeting and retweeting.

3.3.4 LINKED IN
Linked In allows members (both workers and employers) For Nike company,
they create Linked In account to have connections to each other in an online
social network which may represent real-world professional relationships. In
short, it gives advantages to both workers and employers. Based on 2.1.4,
Nike owned 91,053 employees from around the world and have 4,159,620
followers in Linked In. To know more about Nike, you can go to overview to
check on the “about us”, website, industries, company size, headquarters, type
of the company, and specialities. There are also stated the branch locations
and Nike updates. Therefore, if you searching sports job, Nike Linked In is a
digital footprint to find one.

3.3.5 PINTEREST
Pinterest is a very simple digital footprint because it is all about photos.
However, Nike reached 10m+ monthly viewers in Pinterest. Pinterest is little bit
similar to Instargram, if you like it, you can save to board to keep the idea and
easy to find.

3.3.6 WEB
A stunning, unique designs is really important to show off business .Whether
you are looking to refresh your company brand, optimise your online presence,
in need of a redesign of your company literature or a reliable, robust email
solution. For example, Nike make their web interesting by putting a moving
photo as a background and state its mission there. For internet beginners,
Google will be the first thing they do which means, to have a complete
information regarding a company is very essential such as Nike put all of
informations needed in the first click of the web to ease people like its contact
number, career, purpose, community impact, news, executives, help and
suppliers. For me web is an easiest digital footprint you can find regarding the
information needed.

4.0 COMMENDATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 IS THE COMPANY DO WELL?
Nike company has do their best, they use all the social media creatively. I use
fully social media potentials. Everytime, each of videos in every social media
gives a big performances and their modelling and promoting is very inspiring
which they use different people, man, woman, kids, old, young and without
being racist as a tools to attract people. Nike company makes everything is a
sports which gives thrilled to people to see their ideas in social media. In
addition, Nike company is always keep update with social medias to avoid
being label as old school product. Moreover, Nike Web is the best social media
you can find because it provides secure informations regarding the company.
Not just that, the story behind its name and slogan is already interesting that
will give fear to other company who try to copy the same name. Every online
shopping like Shoppee, Lazada, and Zalora has Nike not to mention every
shopping malls branch in all the world. So this product is not hard to find.

4.2 WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND THEY DO DIFFERENTLY? WHY?


It Is hard to recommend how to do differently because they already think it
through to do different everyday but all I can recommend is to have telegram
channel because many workers and students do their work and assignment on
Telegram. So while working, they can release stress by window shopping
through Telegram. Nike company can show all the design there. Only the
design and the description of the design and then drop the link of the item to
buy the product.

4.3 HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE COMPANY’S SOCIAL MEDIA


PRESENCE AND DIGITAL FOOTPRINT?
Nike is a well known company, I think it is better for them to keep update their
post on Facebook. Their last update is 28th January 2018. Old school people
who do not know how to use other social media than Facebook, they will not
know the latest design of every sports item in Nike company. Other than that, I
would recommend to do more sports outfit modelling on children because
based on my research, Nike seems like focus more on man and woman outfit
on social medias. Nowadays they are many young marriege couples who have

kids. Hence, children sports outfit should be expose more on social media so
that their parents can choose the comfortable and perfect sports outfit for outfit
of the day selfie(OOTD) and for outdoor activity with the loved ones.
