WORKSHEET 1

1. Happy Family
The efforts of the Prelature to build up and strengthen the FAMILY started as early
as 1964. During that time, there were already conferences and discussions about family
welfare and birth regulations. It was only in the early part of 1970 that a strong family
apostolate really took root. The Prelature began to be more involved with people in the
different situations of their life through community building. The Church’s growing
awareness of the different problems in the community spurred the growth of the
Prelature’s Family Life Apostolate.

2. Diocesan Schools
Catholic Education in Antique started with the arrival of the Spanish Missionaries.
In 1946 after World War II, some missionary priests in Antique started Parochial schools.
When Antique became a Prelature in the year 1962, the number of Catholic Schools
increased rapidly which were Pandan Bay Institute (Pandan), Dao Catholic High School
(Dao, Tobias Fornier), San Jose Academy, St. Anthony’s College, St. Anthony’s High
School (Barbaza), St. Augustine’s Academy (Patnongon), St. Michael’s High Academy
(Culasi), St. Vincent’s High School (San Remigio), St. Therese’s High School (Casay, Anini-
y), St. Blaise’s High School (Sebaste), St. Luke’s Academy (Bugasong) and Sta. Rita
Academy (Sibalom). The Diocesan Schools in Antique’s one single dimension which make
them differ from the other schools in the province and which the Diocese considers
essential, is that they are Catholic Schools. The aims and objectives of the schools conforms
to the Constitutional requirements for schools in the country but Diocesan Schools add to
these requirements a Catholic Philosophy of Life.
3. Antique Cooperatives
The Antique Cooperatives Extension Service (ACES) is an organization of
Cooperatives set up in 1966 and were registered in Securities Exchange Commission (SEC)
in 1969 under the name of Antique Cooperatives Rural Extension Service or ANCORES.
In September 1969, 21 Cooperative Credit Unions had been registered and had organized
themselves into a Federation called, “Antique Federation of Cooperative Credit Unions,
Inc. or AFCCUI. Speaking Antique’s Cooperative is like speaking of the Prelature and now
the Diocese of San Jose de Antique in the province. Both have stood the test of time. Both
aim at the development of truly Christian Society by helping each man help himself.

4. Catechetical Institute
The Catechetical Institute Mensa Domini was founded by Bishop Cornelio de Wit
on November 4, 1968 to formally open the Catechetical Training Institute in the Prelature,
as an answer to the need of professionally trained catechists for schools and parishes. The 2
objectives of the Catechetical Institute are “The Formation for the Religious Life” and
“The Formation for Catechetical Apostolate”. The graduates of Catechetical Institute were
assigned to the different parishes all throughout the prelature. Most of them taught in
schools, did parish work, help train other catechists, gave instructions on Baptism and
Marriage and on other occasions. As the years goes by the needs of the Prelature and now
the Diocese changed thus challenges also arises. The existence of the ordinary catechists
needed more training.

5. B.E.C. (Basic Ecclesial Communities)

A tangible sign of Antique Diocesan concern for the growth of Christian
communities in the province is its launching of the KK or Kumonidad nga Kristohanon in
1960’s. The program began with the two-year training of pastoral assistants at the
Catechetical Institute Mensa Domini in San Jose, Antique. The training of the first group
of pastoral assistants started in 1969. The only Objective of the Training: “Deepening of
their Christian faith and strengthening of their commitment to help others live Christian
life.” Lessons in self-awareness, awareness of others and sharing became the highlights of
the training.
