1. Describe Tuan Haji Md. Shuhaimie’s leadership style within the Kulim Land
Office.

Based on the case study article, Tuan Haji Md. Suhaimie’s leadership styles
within the Kulim Land Office are people-oriented leadership and achievement-
oriented leadership.

Firstly, people-oriented leadership style is considered as a motivating style. It


also known as a supportive leadership. This type of leadership catch-all terms
that includes coaching, providing a psychological support for subordinates,
friendly and participative leadership. For example, Tuan Haji Md. Suhaimie puts
his employees as a priority. He socially got along with the entire staff,
regardless the position and grade. Also, he enjoyed eating., joking and relaxing
with them. In addition, as a leader, he applied the “5F” concept which is
friendly, financial support, for every customer, fight for achievement and full
support from staff, family and boss. These showed that he is a people-oriented
based leader.

Secondly, achievement-oriented leadership style is a characterized by a leader


who challenges subordinates to perform work at the highest level possible. This
leader establishes a high standard of excellence for subordinates and seeks
continuous improvement. So, this type of leadership will encourage the
employees to reach their peak performance. For example, as a leader, he
always has such effective plans to achieve the targets for his company. The
Land Administrator did not have to force his staff to take part in any of his
initiatives because he had given them the chance to utilize their talents to
achieve their common goals.

2. What should Tuan Haji Md. Shuhaimie, as the Land Administrator, do to avoid
criticism for his leadership style in the future?

To avoid the criticism for his leadership style in the future, Tuan Haji Md.
Suhaimie, as what has been complaint by some superiors at the state
headquarters, he need to change his old method. Means that Tuan Haji Md.
Suhaimie cannot force the his staff to work overtime of after office hours and
always follow the guidelines when doing tasks. Then, he should not involve the
lower-level staff in tasks that should be done by the high-level tasks because it
is not their job to do so. This means that Tuan Haji Md. Suhaimie need to use a
different method or system that suitable with the organisation.
3. What leadership approach could be chosen by the state headquarters’ superiors
to influence their subordinates to be the same as those at the Kulim Land
Office? 

A leadership approach that could be chosen by the state headquarters’ superiors


to influence their subordinates to be the same as those at the Kulim Land Office
is a democratic leadership. Democratic leadership in an organization involves
the redistribution of power and authority between employees and managers to
provide employee involvement in decision making. Involving all employees in
making decisions is very important to an organisation to make sure all
employees contribute in every part of discussion and taking the responsibility as
an employee to make decision.
