TASK

You live in a suburban neighborhood on the outskirts of a growing city. The city’s tax base has
increase for several years because of a variety of new businesses-from an automotive plant to
a subsidiary of a software giant from the west coast. As a result of the growth and the increase
in population, the city manager has proposed creating a new airport, which would service
both commuter and jet aircraft, approximately 15 miles from your suburban neighborhood.
While city officials are excited about the potential of the new airport, you and a small group of
concerned citizens are less than excited about the potential noise pollution that jet aircraft
would bring to the area. You along with a few neighbors decide to bring the issue to the city
commission, but you need facts to support your case. You decide to do a little research on
decibel ratings, define the principal and establish the ratings of jet aircraft. You believe that
the decibel ratings will be high enough to cause permanent hearing loss, but you’ve got to
convince a number of people who really want the new airport.
