    Q1. Compare and contrast language and dialect. (15)

    Q2. If the speakers of two varieties can understand each other, then the varieties
    concerned are instances of the same language; otherwise they are not. This is a widely
    used criterion, but it cannot be taken seriously because there are such serious problems
    in its application (Simpson 1994). Discuss the problems with pertinent examples. (15)
