Precautions when Working with Batteries

Purpose: Use this job aid to review additional precautions to take when working with batteries.

There are several additional precautions to take when working with batteries:
Battery charging installations must be located in areas designated for that purpose.
Facilities shall be provided for
flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolytes
fire protection
protecting charging apparatus from damage caused by trucks
adequate ventilation for dispersal of fumes from gassing batteries
A conveyor, overhead hoist, or equivalent material handling equipment shall be provided for handling
batteries.
Reinstalled batteries shall be properly positioned and secured in the truck.
A carbon filter or siphon shall be provided for handling electrolytes.
When charging batteries, acid shall be poured into water. Water shall not be poured into acid.
Trucks shall be properly positioned and the brake applied before attempting to change or charge
batteries.
Care shall be taken to assure that vent caps are functioning. The battery, or compartment, covers
shall be open to dissipate heat.
Smoking shall be prohibited in the charging area.
Precautions shall be taken to prevent open flames, sparks, or electric arcs in battery charging areas.
Tools and other metallic objects shall be kept away from the top of uncovered batteries.
Trucks in need of repairs to the electrical system shall have the battery disconnected prior to such
repairs.
