Areas of Counseling

The areas that counseling deals with include:

1. Abuse.
Abuse is the improper usage or treatment of a thing, often to unfairly or
improperly gain benefit. Abuse can be of many types i.e. sexual, physical, mental and
emotional abuse. Abuse can be very distressing for a person to go through. Counseling
can help people to work through and help them to rebuild their self-belief and confidence.
It can assist people in their understanding that things were not their fault and give them a
space where they can be heard.
2. Addiction.
Addiction is a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in
rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. It can be of alcohol, drugs, exercise,
gambling, shopping, smoking, sex, work, etc. counseling supports people in the process
of letting the addiction go.
3. Anger management.
Anger management counseling is about teaching people that anger can be
expressed in a healthy way and that it is possible to be angry without being destructive.
4. Bereavement and loss.
Whether bereavement is sudden or expected, it is highly distressing and
traumatic. Loss can be of relationship, animal, home, job, etc. It leaves people feeling
empty and alone. Counseling helps people as they go through the different stages of grief
and that they have support that they need.
5. Stress.
Stress plays a massive role in a lot of people’s lives. Sometimes work,
relationships, money and health concerns can cause people to feel under pressure. Stress
is really hard to live with but counseling can offer an outlet for this and a place where
people can discuss and work through the factors that are causing you to feel so stressed
out.
6. Low self-esteem and confidence.
People often come for counseling because they have very low self-worth. They
lack confidence and their self-esteem is very fragile. Counseling can really help people to
start to believe in themselves again and to recognize what they have to offer and positive
aspects of themselves.
7. Relationship counseling/Couple counseling.
Couples come for counseling when they struggle to communicate or when they
have issues with intimacy or their sex life. A counselor can help couples to start hearing
each other and to listen and support each other. Counseling is also beneficial if
individuals or couples are going through a divorce and they want someone to support
them through this.
8. Family counseling.
It is a type of counseling which involves the whole family. They work on their
relationships with each other, try to improve communication and get understanding about
what factors in the family are causing problems.
9. Career counseling.
It deals with career exploration, making career choices, managing career changes,
lifelong career development and dealing with other career-related issues.
10. School counseling.
School counselor supplies school students with the information they need to be
academically successful and provide social and emotional support.
11. Vocational counseling.

It helps in developing skills and ability to practice a vocation in a productive


way. It includes physical training and instructions regarding workplace performance. It
also includes assessment of employees’ interest and aptitude.

12. Disability counseling.


It is a type of counseling which can be life enhancing for those who are disabled.
It helps people with different disabilities to adapt and cope with the disability.
13. Sports counseling.
It is a specialized field of work in which counselors are concerned with the well-
being, mental functioning and physical performance of athletes.
14. Depression counseling.
It helps people to deal with negative thoughts and feeling and/or provide guidance
towards personal growth. A depression counselor listens with empathy and expertise.
He/she is professionally trained to deal with depression.
15. Eating disorder counseling.
An eating disorder counselor is a professionally trained counselor who deals with
individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or any other eating
disorder.
