CHAPTER-1

INTRODUCTION

Digital marketing is the key factor in brand awareness and business communication which
provides information about the products and services and helps the customers or consumers to
make the decisions. The era of information and communication technology has changed the
world a lot and has emerged as the key to trade and development. The rapid development of
information and communication technology has changed the world drastically. A strong
communication is the ultimate purpose of advertising which may sell the products or services to
the target group.
In recent years, advertising has become a part of the digital age in Bangladesh and the industry
is progressing a lot. The boring platform is an advertising firm where they offer various services
and marketing plans. They make sure about the standard and quality services they provide to
their clients. Thus, the increasing popularity of digital advertising demand in Bangladesh made
the boring platform to focus more on it.
Since, internship is a part of a BBA degree, this is a report on my internship program which I
attended at the boring platform and gathered knowledge to write on it. Therefore, I have
prepared this working on the company’s overview.

the ventures have their unique audience and client bases accordingly.
GG AD provides smart tablets in Uber/Pathao cars and connects ride-sharing passengers with

another platform to be in, other than social media.
DD AD is a "Digital Point-of-Sale Marketing" solution that connects FMCG Brands to the
shoppers of general stores. Through LED Displays in general stores, brands can run their video
commercials, displaying their products and engaging with the shoppers right where their
products are being purchased.

DETAILS OF THE PRODUCT LINE OR SERVICES

The current product portfolio of The Boring Platform includes In-Car Advertisement Platform
and Retail Advertisement Platform.

In-Car Advertisement: GG AD provides services through an app in the tablets on the backseat
of ride-sharing cars such as Uber and Pathao where the client's can promote their brands and
products through different types of content and in various ways. While advertising, they
connect with the passengers by letting them surf through different activities like browsing
restaurants, clothing stores, offers around Dhaka etc. Additionally, passengers have
entertainment options such as trendy music, TV shows, vlogs, short films etc so the passengers
do not get bored in their commute.

Retail Advertisement Platform: DD AD provides general stores throughout Dhaka with LED
Televisions, set up with DD AD's software. Brands can access these Televisions (currently in 50
stores) from their computer and display their video campaigns through the software. That way,
FMCG brands can easily do retail marketing without the hassle of making materials, saving both
money and time. Clients get access to a Dashboard (web application) that they can use to track

CHAPTER- 2

INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE/ OBSERVATION

Well I could not enjoy the office environment as I have to work from home due to this
pandemic-COVID 19. During the period of my internship, my responsibilities were diverse like,
at first I was assigned to learn different phases of work but later on I started working in
different sections. I really enjoyed my work as my supervisor is very friendly and he mentored
me most of the time when I got stuck into my required work and gave experiences which will
help me in the coming days.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
This part includes all the responsibilities and detailed weekly work description of the job I had
to do during my internship period-

Week 1 - The situation of the country is little crucial due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
Therefore, on the first day of my office I was introduced to everyone through a zoom meeting. I
was introduced with the CEO of the company, Mr. Masru Ahmed Rafi and also with the other
colleagues. My supervisor is Mr. Rayeean who is guiding me through my whole internship. I was
assigned to assist with the Marketing & Sales team and the HR team. They gave me a briefing
session on how to work with the team and how the work will be allocated. We used TRELLO to
manage our work, upload documents and get notified for any updates. We used the SCRUM
framework for everyday work and operations. Later, my supervisor briefed me about the on-
going projects and about the recruitments for hiring new employees. I took most of the first
week getting familiar with the business, its operations, the team and how they work. Later in
the week, I was assigned to communicate with vendors to discuss a contract and follow up on
the recruitment process which was already under-going.

Page | 11
Week 2 - It’s been week two at THE BORING PLATFORM where my tasks were already updated
and they have sent me a link to TRELLO where I can check what I have been assigned to do this
week. For me TRELLO was a new thing, never heard it before and they even follow a Scrum
framework and under that the Sprint rule (3 days challenge). I got familiar with these things
which were really interesting and I loved learning new things. I was assigned to go through the
HR management strategy where I have to make a short list of the candidates which was around
100 CVs for the IT department and then list out a few potential candidates for the new hiring
session. Then I worked with the marketing team to make a promotional strategy for DD AD
(Dokane Dokane AD), where I assisted on content and creative, the photo-shoot requirement
and copywriting for brochure.

Week 3 – It was not so easy for me to work from home as an intern. I was having difficulties to
cope up with everything but my supervisor was so helpful. This week I sorted the CVs and had a
meeting with the CTO to know more about what type of employee we need to hire to handle
our software as the company was working on PHP (coding language) and Android development
for their projects.

Week 4 – Over the past three weeks of my internship period, I have been noticing a visible
difference between the academic and practical life. I am glad that I am learning new things
every time. This entire week was dedicated to learn about the products/projects. The company
is operating with two softwares for two different projects. First one is for GG AD (Garite Garite
Ad) where they provide smart tablets in ride-sharing cars (uber/pathao). The app lets
passengers browse all sorts of latest news, nearby restaurants, businesses, e-commerce
websites, offers and most importantly surf through videos and music on the go. Here,
advertisers can place video and banner ads and can manage or change their campaigns
whenever they want to through a Campaign Management Tool. This is a very unique
entertainment and advertising platform like none other in Bangladesh. Similarly, DD AD
(Dokane Dokane Ad) uses an app in Display Systems that is installed in general stores for
Advertisement. Brands can use this web application to run video commercials in the displays
and promote their product in retail/general stores, right where their product is being

Page | 12
purchased. Both apps have their own dashboard which is used to track and monitor the
campaigns performance and audience data (like number views or visitors, demography etc).

Week 5 – I have already completed a month at THE BORING PLATFORM pursuing my Internship.
In the fourth week I have learned about the software and this fifth week I can now relate to the
business opportunities of both the projects and eventually persuade new clients and also follow
up on previous clients. Basically, we already have the contact list of brand managers and
business owners as well as sales executives of around 300 companies and from that I have
shortlisted and had a briefing session with my supervisor. This week I made calls to potential
businesses/brands who can be our clients which were shortlisted and explained them about our
platforms, how it works, what benefits they can acquire by promoting in the platforms. This was
basically to create awareness to a potential group of brands so that they can allocate their
marketing budget beforehand in the upcoming budgeting session in January (apparently all
businesses and corporates allocate their marketing budget in January).

Week 6- This is my sixth week working from home and this week I have been assigned to
prepare the vendor relationship strategy where Mr Arman Sir (our CMO) guided me. For two of
the projects we have almost the same strategy but the incentives are different - for e.g. in GG
AD, as incentives we give cash to the uber/pathao drivers and the top 3 performers (in terms
number of rides per month) gets a bonus payment, as well as gifts. Moreover, they are taken to
lunch twice every month and briefed. On the other hand, in DD AD we make the payment to
vendors/store owners (in terms of number of ADs playing) and provide them with internet
connectivity for free. Apart from that, this week I had to follow up on stores to check if there is
any problem with the internet connection or not and called the new vendors to list down are
they interested in installing the Displays and what time will be convenient for them to set it up.
Besides that I had to ensure that our updated app hand reached the displays with our existing
vendors.

Week 7- Over the past six weeks I have been working on different tasks and almost every day I
am learning new things and enjoying my work. This week I have been assigned to upload the
Page | 13
job posts in Facebook and LinkedIn and assist in making the questionnaire for the interview as
our company will be hiring a new CTO. This week was a little bit tough for me as I had to work
on the recruitment process from scratch; starting by creating job post, publishing it, collecting
CVs, sorting out the CVs according to our requirement, making calls to the candidates, sending
them emails and finally setting up date and time for interview.

Week 8 & 9 – These two weeks were as hectic for me as most of our people were working on
field acquiring stores and placing displays for DD AD in new locations. Hence, I had to handle all
the internal communications between the teams and also deal with client calls and emails.

FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT

HR DEPARTMENT:

Well we have a very small HR department and basically with a small team I look after that which
includes vendor relationship and communication with the clients of both the projects. To
develop the relationship with vendors we need to communicate like to do business with us,
what benefit he will get and to avoid the conflict with them we need to make sure not to do
late payments etc as well as to know about the problems and to solve for them. We need to
look after the recruitment process which includes the function of preceding the selection

MARKETING DEPARTMENT:

The marketing department plays a vital role in promoting the business and mission of an
organization. This department job is to reach out to clients, prospects or investors while
creating an overarching image. So the duties of the marketing department include:

● Managing our brand

Page | 14
● To conduct campaign for marketing initiatives
● Creating content
● Producing promotional material
● Monitoring and managing
● Develop communications
● Overseeing vendors
● Giving feedbacks

CHAPTER 3

INTERNSHIP OUTCOME/ISSUE ANALYSIS/ EMPIRICAL

ANALYSIS

Interaction with supervisors & co workers

I was pretty satisfied with the way my supervisor behaved with me, a part of that he was always
there for me to guide me with any tasks I found difficult to perform. In the beginning I found it a
little tough to cope up with them as it was work from home, however, I managed and my
capability to adapt to any situation has helped to have a good interaction with them through
zoom meetings.

Experience VS Expectation

The boring platform has been a great experience for me. I was anticipating that it would just
work like any other marketing agency in Bangladesh. But the point of view has changed
completely as soon as my interaction with the CEO and COO developed. As a result, I could

Page | 15
learn a lot from them and I must admit that they are the most humble person I have met. They
encourage people a lot and help people to develop their skills to meet real-world challenges.

I have gained good knowledge about work after joining THE BORING PLATFORM and my
experience was overwhelming, besides that the company has actually developed me into a
punctual person and has also equipped me for my further journeys.

ANALYSIS OF THE INDUSTRY/MARKETS

The Boring Platform primarily operates in the marketing industry. This industry is currently
experiencing an upward rise and is a contender to put a huge impact in the business
environment of Bangladesh, especially due to digital marketing. Even though Bangladesh has a
low rate of online literacy the industry has doubled in size in 2017, due to a number of reasons.
Digital marketing involves digital platforms such as smartphones, computers, laptops, etc,
therefore it has become much more accessible for businesses to engage with consumers
through various marketing strategies as users of such platforms continue to grow, even in the
rural parts of the country. To add to this, statistics show that Bangladesh is currently placed in
tenth position, in terms of mobile phone user base in the world. Another factor of this huge
growth in digital marketing is due to the fact that a large portion of Bangladesh’s population
consists of young people that are progressively gathering on social media which allow firms to
collect information in order to create target specific advertisements. Furthermore, under the
leadership of the Awami League during their two consecutive terms as the ruling party since
2008, their Vision 2021 of “Digital Bangladesh”, implying the broad use of computers and
technologies not just in the business sector but other sectors such as education, health, job
placement, etc, caused a radical change in digital marketing which is due to the country’s
emphasis on the application of technology, causing a massive growth in internet connection
and use of ICT in education and accessibility of public services. These advancements have
opened up new possibilities in Bangladesh. Uber, Pathao, AirBnB as well as The Boring Platform,

Page | 16
are great examples of that.

One of the main objectives of marketing is to catch the attention of consumers but ensuring
that the attention turns out to be effective can only be done by engaging with the target
audience and using data and insights obtained from digital marketing. As mentioned above The
Boring Platform is currently involved in a new form of digital marketing such as GG Ad and DD
Ad there are two main barriers to enter this industry. One of them is high set up costs, since it
involves a high investment in software development and hardware like tablets and screens to
set up in cars and local general shops. Another main challenge to enter this industry is that
gathering information that are effective can be time consuming and may result in a high level of
spending resources. Unless new strategies are adapted, these barriers may discourage new
firms to enter the market.

For existing firms the high investment and research is an advantage as it reduces the
possibilities of new competitors entering the market. However, the over reliance on technology
can be a weakness as there are some factors that can halt day to day operations for instance
servers being down and unwanted cyber attacks caused by malware and viruses. There are
more uncertainties involved in this industry. For instance, The Boring Platform’s GG ad and DD
ad relies on vehicles for hire and local general stores however, hypothetically, if the standard of
living in Bangladesh rises and people start opting for their own private cars and start shopping
at chain grocery stores such as Meena Bazaar or Shopno, demand for Uber , Pathao and local
general stores will fall, causing a negative effect on firms’ profits as these two services are, in
economic term, complementary goods.

Traditionally, the form of advertising that The Boring Platform is implementing is known as OOH
(Out-of-Home) advertisement. As the name suggests, OOH advertisements are found outside
our homes. Starting from billboards, ads on street benches to ad placements found on our daily
commute through airports and train stations, OOH advertisements can be spotted nearly
everywhere, as this form of advertising is placed in thousands of locations throughout

Page | 17
Bangladesh. Pran, Grameenphone, Arong and various other large companies are media buyers
and make frequent and extensive use of various OOH formats. Companies opt for billboards,
posters and signs because unlike online ads they cannot be blocked or skipped and are able to
grab the attention of consumers even for a brief moment. Furthermore, a research conducted
by Ocean NeuroScience confirms that after being exposed to an OOH advertisement first, the
chances of consumers clicking the same ad found online rises up to 48%. For years, Bangladesh
did not have a breakthrough in terms of OOH as billboards and posters were the only major
format used by companies however; in recent times that is not the case anymore. For instance
transit ads, another form of OOH have been recently sighted in Bangladesh. Transit ads are
placed on the exterior of public transportations such as BRTC buses.

LED billboards and digital screens near bus stops and footpaths are also being implemented in
Bangladesh as they offer a greater flexibility than traditional billboards or posters since they can
show various eye-catching animations and multiple messages in order to have an effective
communication with consumers. These are DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) advertisements, a
category of OOH. DOOH is a similar marketing channel as out-of-home advertisement however;
it implements two major platforms that create a significant distinction from OOH, which are
digital billboards, signage and place-based networks. According to PQ Media, 28.3% of all OOH
advertisements worldwide were due to digital out-of-home advertisements. Firms believe that
the chances of ads being noticed by consumers are doubled if they choose DOOH
advertisements. Furthermore, place-based networks offer huge benefits, as it allows firms to
collect data insights and analytics and better audience targeting. For instance, the tablets
installed by The Boring Platform inside ride sharing cars use GPS to enable location based
marketing which allow brands to specify their location through geo fencing whether their ads
will be viewed to consumers or not. A number of advertising agencies have already placed
digital billboards throughout Dhaka city, however the form of DOOH that The Boring Platform
are working on are still uncharted territories for businesses in Bangladesh. Including The Boring
Platform, currently there are three main players in this sector Ad-cast and Ad-Rent, two direct

competitors of the firm.

IDENTIFY A SPECIFIC ISSUE AND ANALYSE THE ISSUE BASED

ON RELEVANT TECHNIQUES WITH THE SUPPORT OF SUITABLE
THEORY

The Boring Platform is a marketing based service organization with a complex business model.
Therefore, there were multiple challenging situations throughout my internship period.
However, the most significant issue was pursuing and communicating with prospects. It is
evident that the organization is still growing and moving forward with new technology and
innovation. In the long run it is quite fascinating but currently, the target market is still not
ready for their product and services. So in order to successfully educate the future clients, I had
to know every detail and function of our services, which turned out to be quite overwhelming.

It is essential for the organization to maintain a good and informative relationship with every
short term and long term prospects. However, trying to explain the products & services and
pursuing them to consider this platform are two extraordinary tasks. For e.g. there are “terms”
that all brand managers of big corporates use while communication and so I faced difficulties to

Page | 20
cope and pursue the conversation effectively. This creates a long term impact as the expected
service incorporated in educating the client was not being delivered adequately.

Even though The Boring Platform is a start-up company, most of their prospects are major
corporates around Bangladesh who tend to stick to outdated marketing methods which are
quite different from what The Boring Platform is providing.

The issues mentioned in the organization are directly related to inadequate communications
between The Boring Platform and their prospects (or other external stakeholders). Hence, to
tackle the issue we require the Customer Service Gap Model.

The Customer Service Gap Model (or otherwise known as the gap model) states the gap
between customer expectations and the customer perceptions. The Gap is the difference
between customer expectations and customer perceptions. Customer expectation is what the
customer expects according to available resources and is influenced by cultural background,
family lifestyle, personality, demographics, advertising, the experience they associate with.
Customer perception is totally subjective and is based on the customer’s interaction with the
product or service. Perception is derived from the customer’s satisfaction with the specific
product or service and the quality of service delivery. Therefore, when it comes to educating
the prospects and retaining clients, it is essential to close the various gaps in the
communication service quality:

● Gap 1 Prescription: Learn What Customers Expect

Page | 21
● Gap 2 Prescription: Establish the Right Service Quality Standards
● Gap 3 Prescription: Ensure That Service Performance Meets Standards
● Gap 4 Prescription: Ensure That Delivery Matches Promises

Different people have different traits and essentially, identifying all the different types of brand
managers and their traits can help us identify their expectations from our platform. Secondly,
all the processes and technical insights must be communicated by the most capable personnel
standing higher in the hierarchy of the organization. This way the organization will convey trust
and confidence and later pursuing the prospects and retaining the clients can be done
adequately. Evidently, this will narrow the communication gap, making the operation smoother
and prospects will gain our trust eventually turning into clients.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Boring Platform is a potential marketing start-up in Bangladesh based on Digital Out of
Home advertisement. Their aim is to be the biggest and most effective DOOH Marketing Wing
and the following recommendations can take them a step closer towards their end goal:

● Better understanding of traditional marketing methods and creating counter benefits

that outweigh them. This way, prospects who are biased towards outdated media can
be reasoned with and pursued effectively.
● Creating a flow of communication hierarchy so that all types of information are
exchanged with maximum understanding.
● Moving slower in the market. It is essential to not rush in the market because the more
aggressive the business is the more cash it burns. So the primary focus must be
marketing and educating and then later progressing with client acquisitions so that the
there is a higher chance of gaining back the cash that has been burnt in the process.

Page | 22
● Prepare for threats. The market potential in this industry is very broad and there are
high chances of new players entering the market. So, in order to tackle the issue,
investment must be ready. In terms of competition the race is towards acquiring most
vendors and which will take a hefty amount of cash outflow.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION
I would like to conclude the report sharing my overall achievement over the past three months
of my internship. This journey has helped me to improve and build up my aptitudes, capacities
and knowledge. I had a great experience at the boring platform and I met some faces who were
pretty helpful and have taught me a lot of techniques to deal with the corporate world.
Unfortunately, due to work from home I could not enjoy the office environment but I am
thankful to my supervisor and director for their guidance. I would like to thank IUB SB for
designing such an outstanding course so that we can recognize our weaknesses and focus more
on developing our skills, abilities, personalities and other things in order to build a bright career
in future.
