Fundamentals Concepts of Electricity

Electricity is a form of energy used for

lighting, heating, or providing control
and power for machines.

Electrical boards/panels distribution

A distribution board (also known as panelboard,

breaker panel, or electric panel) is a component of
an electricity supply system that divides an electrical
power feed into subsidiary circuits, while providing a
protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a
common enclosure.

Circuit faults

A circuit consists essentially of two parts:

• CONDUCTOR

• INSULATION
Types of circuit fault:
• OPEN-CIRCUIT FAULT

• EARTH FAULT

• SHORT-CIRCUIT FAULT
Generators Synchronization
and Protection
• Importance of synchronizing of
Generators

• Synchronization with the aid of the

following:
 Sequence Lamps
 Synchroscope
 Voltmeter
 Ammeter
Preferential trip is a kind of electrical
arrangement on ship which is designed to
disconnect the non-essential circuit i.e. non-
essential load from the main bus bar in case
of partial failure or overload of the main
supply.
The non-essential circuits or loads on
ships are air conditioning, exhaust and
ventilation fans, and galley equipment
which can be disconnected momentarily
and can be connected again after fault
finding.
Overload protection is a protection against

a running overcurrent that would cause

overheating of the protected equipment.

Hence, an overload is also type of

overcurrent.

Main circuit and Control circuit

Main circuit- circuit with load which consumes high

power, such as a motor for power source.

Control circuit – circuit with electromagnet,

such as relay, which is required by main circuit
control. It sometimes called auxiliary circuit or
operational circuit.
Magnetic Contactor
Relay operation

Relay consists of coil for electromagnet and contact point for

ON/OFF operation.
