imple.Matterisjuststuff.Itisyourdeskatschool,thestudentsandteachersin
yourclassroom,therainoutside,andtheairyoubreathe.Everythingthatsurr
oundsyou,andevenyouyourself,ismatter.

VolumeandMassAllmattermusthavetwoqualities,orcharact
eristics.First,itmusttakeupspace.That’seasytoseewithmanyobjects.Cars,
chairs,andpeoplearesolidthingsthattakeupspace.Oceans,lakes,andrivers
areliquids,buttheytakeupspacetoo.Evenairtakesupspace.
Theamountofspaceanobjecttakesupiscalleditsvolume
Thesecondqualityofmatteristhatithasmass.Thisisameasureofhowmuc
hmatterisinanobject.
Atomsarethesmallestpiecethatanelementcanbebrokenintowithoutlosi
