An Embodiment of Leadership

It was a morning of humility and inspiration as Mr. Simplicio “Plecy” Hermogenes shared
a part of his to the scholar and alumni. Hailing from Santa Maria, Bulacan and a son of
farmers, he is a man of perseverance. From his humble beginnings as a student who
juggled his time helping his parents and studying, even missed graduation ceremonies
to save fees, he envisioned a dream — to finish college and to succeed in life.

Initially, he was discouraged by his parents due to their financial state, but with the help
of his uncle who finished a degree in Dentistry; his dreams were bound to happen.
Living the school — home routine, he finished his secondary education at Pres. Sergio
Osmeña High School. This routine was necessary for him as he helped out his uncle
who was running a clinic at the time, admitting he wasn’t part of any outings or
escapades with his batch mates. As he approached college, he first tried an
engineering course. The young, hopeful Mr. Simplicio shared that it was the problem
sets that stopped him from pursuing the program, worried that his average might not
reach the maintaining cut in PLM. He ended up taking BS Economics and Public Affairs
Major in Accounting. He had his on-the-job training at Pilipinas Shell Petroleum
Corporation (PSPC) and was eventually absorbed by the company due to his
tremendous performance as a trainee. He was always applauded by > for his
professionalism and his consistency at being just. His next years were spent on private
companies, but his heart to serve the public was only about to be born. As he first ran
and won as a Barangay Chairman, he started numerous initiatives including scholarship
programs as he believes in the saying “Edukasyon ang susi sa tagumpay.” This
program had benefitted many scholars during his leadership. He also said how he did
not require his scholars to pay him back, as when he was at their age, his situation was
unimaginable, and if not by the help of someone, he may not be where he was. But
what he wanted was for the legacy to continue along with the act of giving, that one day
his scholars will also have scholars of their own.
Up to this day, he is still serving the public, being a Homeowners President at Philam
Village, Quezon City. He reminds us that we should always have a plan, to observe our
surroundings as the motivation to move forward is always just around the corner.

For us, scholars, it was indeed an honor to have him as the speaker of the event
because there were was so much to learn from his adventures in his academic,
professional, political career, and even his private and personal life. The advices he
has given became a motivation for the scholars to do good and try their bests to reach
the goals they are aiming for. “Kapag gusto, may paraan. Kapag ayaw may dahilan,”
one of the ancient advices or sayings that we could hear from elders but the most used
and applicable in life. Even with these challenges, he still went to a university and strive
hard until he graduated and become a successful man, now with a lovely wife and four
children.

This kind of story is one of those that give inspirations to prepare for the future and be
able to survive different trials that may come our way. There is no room for giving up,
trust God and His plans because it will surely lead you to your own path of betterment.

With this very inspiring story, Mr. Simplicio Hermogenes makes us realize the extension
of our capabilities as a person. Whatever’s in our minds, we can achieve it, anything is
and will always be possible. Behind his very successful background is the heart of a
scholar, a student, just like you and me.
