3. OPERATION
3-1 De Voltage Measurernent
I.Connect the BLACK test lead to the COM jack and the RED test lead to the v/n jack.
2.set the FUNCTION switch to the DCV range to be used and conneet the test leads across the
source or load under measurement.
The polarity of the RED lead connection wil! be indieated at the same time as the voltage.

Note: 1. If the voltage range is not known beforehand, set the FUNCTION switch to the highest range
and work down.
2. When only the figure 111" is displayed. overrange is being indicated and the FUNCTION
switch must be set to a higher range.
3. Do not apply more than 1000V to the inpur. Indication is possible at higher voltages but
there is dange of damagingthe internal circuitry.
4. Use extreme caution to avoid contact with high tension circuits when measuring high
voltage.
3-2 AC Voltage measurement

1. Connect the BLACK test lead to the COMjack and the RED test lead to the V/njaek.
2. Set the FUNCTION switch to the ACV range to be used and conneet the test leads aeross the
source or load under measurement..
Note: 1. See DC voltage measurement note 1.2.4
2. do not apply more than 750Vrms to the input indieation is possible at higher voltages
but there is danger of damaging the internal circuitry.
3-3 DC Current Measurement

l. Conneet the BLACK test lead to the COM jaek and the RED test lead to the Ajaek for a
maximum of 2A.For a maximum of 20A, move the red test lead to the 20Ajack.
2. Set the FUNCTION switch to the DCA range to be used and connect the test leads in series
with the load under measurement.
The ploarity at the RED test lead connection will be indicated at the same time as the
corrent.

Note: 1. If the current range is not known beforenand. set the FUNCTION switch to the highest range
and work down.
2. When only the figure" 1" is displayed overrange is being indieated and the FUNCTION
switch must be set at higher range.
3. The maximum input current is 2A.This is or 20A depending upon the jack used. Execessive
current wil! blow the fuse whieh must be replaeed. The 20A Range. is not protected by a
fuse. The fuse rating should not be over 2A to prevent damage to the internal circuitry.
4. The Maximum terminal voltage drop is 200mv.
3-4 AC Current Measurement

l. Connect the BLACK test lead to the COM jaek and the RED test lead to the Ajack, for a
maximum of 2A.
For a maximum of 20A, move the RED test lead to the 20A jaek.
2.Set the FUNCTION switch to the ACA range to be uscd and eonneet the test lead in series
with the load under measurement.
Note: See DC Current Measurement Note 1.2.3.4
3-5 Resistance Measurement
1. Conneet the BLACK test lead to the COMjaek and the RES test lead to the VfQjaek.
(Note:The polarity of the RED test lead is''+")
2. Set the FUNCTION Switch to the Q. range to be used and connect the test leads across the
resistance under measurement.
Note: l. If the resistance value being measured exceeds the maximurn value of the range selected.
an over range indication wil l be displayed ("l"),Select a higher range. For resistanca of
approximately.l Megohm and above. the Meter may take a few seconds to staoilize. This is
normal for high resistance readings.
2. When the input is not connected.i.e.at open circuit. the figure" 1 wiII be displayed for the
11

overrange condition.
3. When checking in- circuit resistance. be sure the circuir under test has a11power removed
and that al! eapacitors are fully discharqed.
3-6 CAPACITANCE MEASUREMENT

1. Before measurement, all capacitance ranges should be zero-setting. At an open condition or

condenseris not connected CAPsockets, turn the "CAP ZERO ADJ" so that zero reading on display.
2.Insert the condenser to cap sockets.
Note: For measurement of polarized condensers, have the polarities of the CAP sockets, agree with
those of a condenser.
3-7 Diode Measurement and Audible Continuity Test

l. Connect the BLACK test lead to the COM jack and the RED test lead to the VID. jack
(Note:The polarity of the RED test lead is "+11 )
2. Set the FUNCTION switch to the range and connect the test leads across the diode under
measurement.
3. Buzzer sounds and LED lamp flashes if the resistance between two prods is less than
approximately 30 ohms.
3-8 Transistor hFE Test

l. Set the FUNCTION switch to the hFE range.

2. Determine whether the transistor is NPN or PNP and locate the Emitter, Base and Collect
Insert the leads into the proper holes in the socket on the front panel.
3. The display will read the approximate hFE value at the test condition. Base Current 10
VCE=2.8v.
3-9 Temperature Measurement (C-type or Cs--type only)

1. Measure temperature with k type thermocouple: Set the FUNCION switch to the T range
and insert the K type therrnócouple plug into K PROBE socket,
2.Measure ambient temperature without probe. On the same T range display reading is
the ambient temperature in "e.
Note: when you measure temperature with thermocouple, never hold the cold end (the end near

plug) of thermocuple with bare hand. as human body temperature will affect the measurement
accuracy.
3-10 Frequency Measurement (F-type only)

l. Connect the BLACK. test lead to the COM jack and the RED test lead to the VIO. jack.
2. Set the FUNCTION switch to the KHZ range to be used and connect the test leads
to device or be measured.
3-11 Auto Power-off (Optional Function)

Automatic Power-off extends the life of the battery by turning the meter off if no
rotary function switch is operated for about 15 mino The meter turns back on if
either the rotary switch is turned or the power switch is pressed again.
4-1. 9-volt Battery Replacement

Note the condition of the 9-volt battery using the procedure described above. If the
battery needs to be replaced. open the back cover, remove the spent
battery and replace it with a battery of the same type.
4-2. Fuse Replacement

Should the fuse need replacement, use only 2DDmA identical in physical
size to the original.
