GENERAL SUMMARY
The Secondary Teacher position within the Hospital-School at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital is very unique. This position
works directly with children ages 5-18 who are hospitalized for medical or psychiatric issues, facing long-term chronic illness,
or recovery from injury in their home communities. Students will be hospital patients for various lengths of time and be at
various stages of treatment. The position requires the ability to coordinate educational services with the student's home
district and work at a pace appropriate for the student. An essential element of this position is demonstrating caring and
compassion for vulnerable children and families in crisis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The job duties listed are essential functions of the position. However, other duties may be assigned, and may also be considered
essential functions of the position.
The caregiver must be sufficiently fluent in the English language to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position.
The degree of fluency required will vary depending upon the nature of the position.

For direct patient care roles: Performs and maintains currency of essential competencies as required by specific area of hire and
populations served.

• Programming for Academic Instruction and Enrichment:


◦ Provide educational expertise in the hospital for 9-12th grade students, including curriculum planning for Math, ELA,
Science, and Social Studies. Will develop hospital curriculum resources to have on-hand for students without available
materials.
◦ Will provide expertise and guidance in GED program for students unable to participate in the traditional high school
experience.
◦ Plan and deliver daily classroom activities for academic instruction, tutoring, or enrichment in the arts and sciences in
conjunction with community partners.
◦ Recruits and organizes creative programming with the Hospital School Program team (i.e., after school clubs and/or
activities).
◦ Assess students’ educational strengths and weaknesses for the purpose of documenting progress and developing
individualized curricula.
◦ Monitors academic progress and the effectiveness of interventions included in the student’s education plan. Makes
suggestions for improvement based upon best practice recommendations.
◦ Use best practice assessment techniques or strategies for Math and ELA.
◦ Serve children in a variety of settings, including at bedside, the hospital classroom, and PCCA (adolescent inpatient
psychiatry). Service will be 1:1, some small groups as patients are able to participate, and groups of no more than 12 for
PCCA.
◦ Is well familiar with End of Course Exams (EOCs) and can administer tests for patients.
◦ Prepares teaching materials for the purpose of adapting lessons to meet the individual needs of students.
◦ Provides appropriate and respectful care for each student with respect to age, developmental level, culture, race,
gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.

• Education Case Management:


◦ Displays a thorough understanding of local school district processes for special education programs, truancy, and other
points that the medically fragile patient/student interacts with in the school system.
◦ Reads and interprets documents such as Individual Education Plans, 504 plans, behavior plans, and lesson plans from
the child’s home school, and participates in transition planning for back to school when the teacher’s knowledge of the
child is needed.
◦ Provides detailed case management for patients/students with chronic illness (including Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis),
including Home/Hospital referrals, letters to school, recommendations for 504 plans and IEPs, and referral to Hospital-
School Liaison for school re-entry support.
◦ Uses advocacy skills to maximize the educational experience for students with extensive illness or disabilities.
◦ Reports student progress to the patient’s community school to aid in transition.

• Teamwork:
◦ Implements service plan as developed in partnership with school liaison.
◦ Guides hospital-school volunteers in identifying patients to serve, and ideas/materials to utilize to meet educational
goals.
◦ Develops effective relationships with students, families, hospital staff, school personnel, and community partners.
◦ Maintains appropriate professional boundaries, i.e., no giving/receiving gifts, not giving out personal contact
information, seeking support for secondary trauma.
◦ Works as part of a large multi-disciplinary team.
◦ Supports the team in understanding the function of the Hospital School Program.

• Professionalism:
◦ Assists in strategic planning for growth and development of the Hospital School Program.
◦ Participates in activities that promote professional development for the purpose of using clinical and educational
research to enhance services.
◦ Attends various educational workshops, seminars, in-services, etc. for the purpose of maintaining.

Required Job related experience in specialized field.
Preferred 5 years Teaching experience.
Preferred Experience in a traditional classroom setting as well as an alternative
learning environment.
Preferred Experience working with children with medical issues, disabilities, and
mental health diagnoses.

• SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet
changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to
safety practices, operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications, planning and managing
projects, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
• KNOWLEDGE is required to read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and
analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development, conflict resolution
methods, and safety practices and procedures.
• ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate, and classify data, and use basic, job-
related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze
data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required
to work with a significant diversity of individuals and groups, work with data of varied types and purposes, and utilize a
variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action
plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives, and problem solving with equipment
is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating
with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, working with hospitalized youth,
working as part of a team, and promoting a positive learning environment.
• Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives, directing
other persons within a small work unit, and operating within a defined budget.
• Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity
to significantly impact the agency’s services.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations must be unencumbered and valid in the state(s) of hire and wherever care is delivered.
