PhDL 505: Approaches in Language Curriculum Design

Curriculum refers to the knowledge and skills that students are expected to

acquire. This includes the learning standards or learning objectives required to be

accomplished by students; the lessons taught by teachers; the assignments and

projects given to students; the books, learning materials, recordings, demonstrations

and readings used in the course; and the exams, evaluations and other measures

used to evaluate student learning. The curriculum also encompasses the rules to be

followed by students and the extracurricular activities that they enjoy.

On the basis of the discussion at the previous conference, curriculum

development is a critical process, particularly the setting of the principles and the

direction. It involves relating the school's vision, mission and goal to what lessons to

offer, how to teach it, and how to assess the learners. Curriculum, basically, is the

building block of how teachers and students may fulfil their tasks and carry out their

responsibilities. It is a guide to how teaching and learning can take place inside and

outside the classroom.
