ABSTRACT

Construction sector is one of the largest end users of environmental resources and
one of the largest polluters of manmade and natural environments around the globe.
Green buildings have experienced rapid growth in the past several years. Rating
systems have been developed to measure the sustainability level of green buildings.
The purpose of rating systems is to certify the different aspects of sustainable
development during the planning and construction stages and to incorporate best-
practice experience for achieving higher certification level. The study reported in this
paper is part of a broader study where the objectives are: (1) to compare different
rating systems used in developing and developed countries, (2) to identify the roles
and limitations of current environmental building assessment methods in ascertaining
building sustainability in developing countries, and (3) to compute sustainability and
composite index using AHP by utilizing the framework suggested by Ding (2007). Only
the first objective is addressed and briefly reported in this paper. In the context of India
it is found that the rating systems do not consider economic and climatic conditions.
This study may be useful to all the stakeholders involved in the evaluation of green
building.

Comparison of various green building rating systems in India is different from other
worldwide rating systems. In order to achieve certification, the project team must work
more closely together and must focus on a wider scope than they would normally be
required Green Building rating system there are different levels of certification and
when you are looking to get the highest level of certification in a particular rating
system, incorporating new and innovative techniques into the building becomes very
essential. While this does make the higher levels of Green Building certification
harder to achieve, this encourages people to develop new and innovative ways to
create Green Buildings. A green building rating system is an evaluation tool that
measures environmental performance of a building through its life cycle. It usually
comprises of a set of criteria covering various parameters related to design,
construction and operation of a green building. Each criterion has pre-assigned points
and sets performance benchmarks and goals that are largely quantifiable. A project is
awarded points once it fulfils the rating criteria. The points are added up and the final
rating of a project is decided. Rating systems call for independent third party
evaluation of a project and different processes are put in place to ensure a fair
evaluation. Globally, green building rating systems are largely voluntary in nature and
have been instrumental in raising awareness and popularizing green building designs.
Rating systems measure relative levels of compliance or performance with against
goals and requirements to create projects that are environmentally responsible and
use resources efficiently throughout the project lifecycle.

SYNOPSIS

INTRODUCTION
A rating system can be defined as a set of prerequisites and requirements that a project team
must fulfill in order to receive certification. This rating system offers different levels that signify
how many prerequisites and requirements a project team fulfilled. A Green Building rating
system is different from other worldwide rating systems. In order to achieve certification, the
project team must work more closely together and must focus on a wider scope than they would
normally be required. Once the project team has fulfilled the prerequisites and requirements,
they can then receive certification for their work. Certification can be defined as a confirmation
that a product meets the criteria that is defined for a particular standard. With each different
Green Building rating system there are different levels of certification and when you are looking
to get the highest level of certification in a particular rating system, incorporating new and
innovative techniques into the building becomes very essential. While this does make the higher
levels of Green Building certification harder to achieve, this encourages people to develop new
and innovative ways to create Green Buildings.
AIM
To understand the various parameters and strategies involved in green rating system.
OBJECTIVE
To define and understand the various parameters and strategies associated with green rating
systems.
To study about various green rating systems in India.
SCOPE & LIMITATIONS:-
This study will focus on green rating system in India.
The research would focus on observation and documentation.
Due to time constraint, Delhi is the only city that would include primary research.
As topic deals with a high amount of statistics and data, there is a considerable amount of
approximation in the dissertation.
METHODOLOGY:-
By understanding the system and the criteria involved in green building rating system
