VI. Concept notes with formative activities
Have you experienced using hand gestures,
body language or illustrations in explaining
something?

1
Do you prefer a reading passage with pictures or illustrations, or just purely text?

Well, these are the questions that will lead you in learning MULTIMODAL TEXT.
Our goal is to understand or comprehend the meaning of what we are reading. Some
people tend to comprehend better when there are images, illustrations and colors.
Others may be comfortable also on understanding the meaning by watching it as a
movie or a video clip.

The way we communicate with each other involves different processes called
MODES.
These MODES are our means of communicating and creating meaning, just like
reading, listening, speaking, writing and viewing.

MODES are also different ways that texts can be presented. It depends on how
someone would like to communicate a message to a reader or listener.

MULTIMODAL TEXTS are texts with a combination of two or more modes to create
meaning. These modes can be linguistic, visual, aural, gestural and spatial.
FIVE MODES OF COMMUNICATION

FIVE MODES OF COMMUNICATION

1. LINGUISTIC MODE

2
- it includes written and spoken words, word choice, vocabulary, grammar,
structure, and organization of sentences and paragraphs. In this mode requires a
person to communicate using words to convey the messages.
Examples:
(ORAL/SPOKEN LANGUAGE)

Reading books Daily Conversation Singing Songs Story Telling

(WRITTEN LANGUAGE)

Invitation cards Food Packaging Letters

Newspapers and magazines Essays

2. VISUAL MODE
- it uses images, videos, color, visual layout, design, font, size, formatting,
symbols, graphic organizers (tables, diagrams, charts, mind maps), and
animations (gif). In this mode meanings are conveyed through the used of pictures
and symbols that people can see.

Examples:

3
Drawing T.V. Show or Movie Photographs

Still and moving pictures Icons Computer Graphics

3. AURAL MODE
- it includes spoken words, sound, music, volume, pitch and rhythm, speed of
delivery, pitch, tone, voice, and sound effects. In this mode, it conveys message
through sounds and sound devices in a specific communication.
Examples:

Songs Musical Drama Music Video

4. GESTURAL MODE

4
- it uses movement, speed and stillness in facial expression, gestures and body
language. In this mode meanings are conveyed through body movements as it puts
a particular message.

Examples:

Daily Conversation with hand gestures

Performing Arts
5. SPATIAL MODE
- it includes physical arrangement spacing, position, organization, proximity,
direction, and distance of elements in a text. In this mode meanings are conveyed
through the position of certain objects.
Example:

Location of a place Tables and chairs arrangement Queue or line

Now that you have learned what is a multimodal text and the modes of
communication. Let us observe, analyze and compare and contrast the given
examples of multimodal texts.

5
Example: JESSICA SOHO AND KORINA SANCHEZ
There are different modes used
here in Jessica Soho’s way of
reporting. The first one is
Linguistic mode as she
includes spoken words and
text. Visual mode is also
visible because of the example
pictures of the topic. Lastly,
Gestural mode because she presents the topic with hand movement.

Now let us take a look with another news reporter. And find out what are the modes
of communication being used.

The first mode of communication

that we can see on Korina Sanchez
way of reporting is the Aural mode.
Aural mode is very visible because
of the presence of microphone as
device to be heard by the viewers.
Korina also uses Linguistic mode
because of the spoken words. And
last but not the least is Gestural Mode because of her hand movement while
speaking or delivering the news.

Remember: The combination of mode of communications in a certain topic

makes it as a MULTIMODAL TEXTS.

DIRECTIONS: Respond to the
following questions by placing a check

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an

infectious disease caused by a newly
discovered coronavirus. Most people
infected with the COVID-19 virus will
experience mild to moderate respiratory
illness and recover without requiring
special treatment.  Older people, and
those with underlying medical problems
like cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
chronic respiratory disease, and cancer
are more likely to develop serious illness.
The best way to prevent and slow down
10
transmission is to be well informed about
mark (/) on the box if those modes of communication are present in the given
pictures and an (X) if it is not.

QUESTIONS PICTURE A PICTURE B

1. Are there pictures and illustrations shown in the
given pictures?
2. Does it convey gestural movement in the picture?
3. Are there written words in the given picture?
4. Are there sounds or music conveyed?

CHALLENGE YOURSELF
TASK 7:
DIRECTIONS: Compare and contrast the pictures and answer the questions that
follow.

In a narrative or creative writing, a plot is

the sequence of events that make up a
story, whether it’s told, written, filmed, or
sung. The plot is the story, and more
specifically, how the story develops,
unfolds, and moves in time. Plots are
typically made up of five main elements:
Exposition: At the beginning of the
story, characters, setting, and the main
conflict are typically introduced. Rising
Action: The main character  is in crisis and
events leading up to facing the conflict
begin to unfold. The story becomes
complicated. Climax: At the peak of the
story, a major event occurs in which the
main character faces a major enemy, fear,
challenge, or other source of conflict. The
most action, drama, change,
and excitement occurs here. Falling
Action: The story begins to slow down and
work towards its end, tying up loose
ends. Resolution/: Also known as the
denouement, the resolution is like a
concluding paragraph that resolves any
remaining issues and ends the story.
Plots, also known as storylines, include the
most significant events of the story and how
the characters and their problems change

TASK 8:

Directions: Compare and contrast the pictures and answer the questions that follow.

The butterfly and moth develop through a

process called metamorphosis. This is a
Greek word that means transformation or
change in shape. Insects have two common
types of metamorphosis. Grasshoppers,
crickets, dragonflies, and cockroaches
have incomplete metamorphosis. The
young (called a nymph) usually look like
small adults but without the wings.
Butterflies, moths, beetles, flies and bees
have complete metamorphosis. The young
(called a larva instead of a nymph) is very
different from the adults. It also usually eats
different types of food. There are four stages
in the metamorphosis of butterflies and
moths: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
