It age began as a race, one that started sanding what the other side was was a race dictated by terrain and circumstances. ‘When the Allies landed in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June, 1944, the city of Caen was one of the major objectives. Ifthe Germans held the city, chey could bring troops into bactle icky and supply their toops using roads running behind their lines. Ifthe British held the city, German positions north of the Odon River would become untenable. With Caen in their hands, the British would be in open country. Originally formed in November of 1901 at Charing Cross, London, its ‘embers came fom throughout the British Empire. After being transferred co Special Reserve in 1913, the regiment was revived for the First World War.
