In our last Module, we discussed about the different preliminary concepts about sets. We will be
continuing this discussion and learn new concepts so, let us get ready and do this!

Oh! And one more thing. Please do not watch the video until you reach the
Watch Me Stations!

More on Subsets
We learned that subsets are sets that came from the universal sets. A proper subset contains
elements in the universal set but not all of it. Improper subset includes the set that contains all elements of
the universal set and the null set.
Example 1:
U = {a, b, 2, 3}
The subsets are:
{a}, {b}, {2},{3}, {a,b}, {a,2}, {a, 3}, {b,2}, {b,3}, {2,3}, {a,b,2}, {a,b,3}, {a,2,3}, {b,2,3}, {a,b,2,3}, ∅

There are 16 subsets for this universal set. We can identify how many subsets a given set has using the
formula
Number of subsets = 2n(cardinality)

This means we multiply 2 by itself based on the cardinality of the set. In the example above, the cardinality
of U is 4, so 24=2x2x2x2=16.

Example 2:
U={1,a,3,m}

Please try to answer this and then watch the video SUBSETS to confirm your answer
and learn a few tricks in listing down subsets. Be honest…

Activity 6: Try This Subsets!


Directions: Determine the number of subsets and list them all down.

Difference of Sets
Previously, you learned about the union and intersection of set. Basically, union of set is like addition
of the elements of sets. Difference of sets is the opposite of this. The difference of two sets is done by
identifying the common elements in each set and then removing them from the first set. Let us look at this
examples.

Given sets A={a,b,c,1,2,3}, B={a,e,i,o,u}, and C={1,2,3,4,5}.


Find A-B.
Step 1: Identify the common elements in the two sets, just like when we look for the intersection of
sets.
For A={a,b,c,1,2,3} and B={a,e,i,o,u}, the element “a” is common to both.

Step 2: Remove the common element/s from the first set. In this case, A is the first set. Thus, we will
remove a from set a.
A={a,b,c,1,2,3}

Therefore, A-B={b,c,1,2,3}

Complement of a Set
A complement of a set is a set that is the difference of the universal set and the given set. It is denoted
by A or A’. We can obtain a complement of a set by taking all the elements in the Universal set not in the

given set.
Example: I f U = { a , b , c , d , e , f , g , h , I , j , k , l , m , n , o , p , q , r , s , t , u , v , w , x , y , z }
A={a,e,i,o,u,v,w,x,y,z}
B={a,c,e,g,I,k,,m,o,q,s,u,w,y}

Ac={a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z}
Therefore, A c = { b , c , d , f , g , h , j , k , l , m , n , p , q , r , s , t } .

Now, please try finding out Bc.

The Venn Diagram


A Venn diagram is a way of depicting the relationship between sets. Each set is shown as a circle
and circles overlap if the sets intersect(https://www.math.uh.edu). Let us look at the example below.

This is the universal set of the letters of the English alphabet. If we have subsets, for example the vowels
and the consonants, we have to place them inside a circle.

The rectangle represents the universal set and the circle represents the subsets. The circles have capital
letters beside them to identify the name of the subset.

If we have another set A={a, b, c, d, e, 1, 2, 3}, what will happen to the circles?

Activity 8: A Box and some Circles!


Directions: Given the Universal Set and its subsets, create a Venn Diagram for each group of sets.
1. U={a, b, c, d,e, 1, 2, 3, 4,5}
A={a, b, c} C={a, b, 1, 2, 3}
B={1, 3, 5}

2. U={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10}
A={1,2,3,4,5} C={,1,2,8,9}

Operation on Sets using Venn Diagram


Venn Diagram is used to illustrate sets. It helps us to see the relationships between sets in a graphical
manner. This section will be about illustrating union, intersection, difference and complement of sets using
the Venn Diagram.

1. Union of Sets-The union of two sets A and B is defined as the set of


elements which are either in set A or set B or in both A and B. This
operation is denoted by the ∪ symbol. The blue area represents the
elements included in the union of Set A and Set B.

2. Intersection of Sets-The intersection of two sets A and B is the set of


elements which are in both sets A and B. The intersection of the two
sets is written as A∩B. The blue area represents the elements included
in the intersection of Set A and Set B.

3. Difference of Sets-The difference of two sets A and B is the set that


contains exactly all elements in A but not in B. The difference of two
sets A and B is denoted by A∖B or A−B. As you see in the figure, the
shaded part is the area in A that does not intersect with B.

4. Complement of a Set-The complement of a set A is the set of elements


in the given universal set U that are not elements of A. The complement
of A is denoted by Ac or A′. In the figure, only the circle for Set A is not
shaded.

rectangle provided for your answers.
