Topic: About Bullying
INTRODUCTION

Although aggression is one of the elements of bullying, not all violence or aggressive actions in
school can fall under this category. For bullying to occur, Olweus (1993) mentioned that a
student must be repeatedly exposed to negative behavior of his/her peers. Moreover, the
perpetrator must have a deliberate intention to harm the victim and the latter should have limited
power to fight back (Nansel et al., 2001; Olweus, 1993) . Without the power imbalance between
the aggressor and the victim as well as regularity of the aggressive act, a negative action done by
one child to another cannot be considered as bullying; rather, it will fall under violence or
aggression (Olweus, 1993).

Bullying is categorized into four types, namely: physical, verbal, cyber, and relational. Physical
bullying includes all forms of physical harm done on the victim such as kicking, shoving,
punching, and the like. Verbal bullying is usually in the form of derogatory remarks or insults
hurled at the target. This may include but not limited to name-calling, taunting, teasing in a
hurtful way, and making fun of the individual (Berger, 2007; Wang, Lannotti, & Nansel, 2009) .
Relational bullying involves social seclusion. It may be done in the form of spreading rumors and
lies about the victim in order to make others avoid socializing with him/her (Wang et al., 2009) .
Cyberbullying, on the other hand, occurs electronically, and has proven to be more damaging
because it often relates to victims’ depressive state, delinquent behavior and substance abuse
(Mitchell, Ybarra, & Finkelhor, 2007) as well as suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts (Hinduja &
Patchin, 2010).

Bullying, long tolerated by many as a rite of passage into adulthood, is now recognized as a major
and preventable public health problem, one that can have long-lasting consequences (McDougall
and Vaillancourt, 2015; Wolke and Lereya ,2015).Those consequences for those who are bullied,
for those who are bullied ,for the perpetrators of bullying ,and for witnesses who are present
during a bullying event include poor school performance, anxiety, depression, and future
delinquent and aggressive behavior .
Rationale of the study

This study seeks to determine the percentage of school bullying in Ariston-Bantog National High
School. It is important to know as a student that some of us at school has experience this and
how we could prevents these from happening.

School bullying surveys for students are important because bullying in all forms can have a
seriously detrimental, long-term impact on not only the victim, but also on other students
exposed to the activities. Specifically, this study wishes to determine the answers to the following
research questions:

1. If students who are bullied can experience a range of effects lasting long past grade-school
days, including depression, low self-esteem, health problems, poor grades, and suicidal
thoughts?

2. If students who bully others are more likely than their peers to feel disconnected from and
dislike school, get into fights, steal and vandalize property, exhibit violent behavior, drink alcohol,
and smoke?

3. If students who observe bullying in the school environment experience negative effects such as
reluctance to attend school, feelings of fearfulness, increased mental health problems such as
depression and anxiety, and increased use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs?

Scope and Limitation

Bullying is still a big problem in our community especially school. In fact, the rate of student
being bullied in school is getting higher and higher every year . 6 out of 10 students are
confirmed to be a bully. They just don’t notice it but their jokes and the way they speak is a kind
of another way of bullying-verbal bullying.

This study directly involves bullies and those who are bullied. This study aims to deepen our
knowledge on why and how bullies act that way . This will help us understand them and in the
same time, help them as well through giving care, love and attention .The researchers surveyed
15 students (high school) of Ariston-Bantog National High School of Bantog,Asingan,Pangasinan.
