Concrete Production/Transportation and placing plan/ procedure

(a) Batching Plant :

Concrete required for the construction of Buildings shall be produced in the Batching
plant of Required Capacity shall be established at work site. Required numbers of
Transit mixers shall be arranged for transport of mix from batching plant to pouring
site. Using concrete pump the Concrete shall be pumped to the required elevation.

Plain and reinforced cement concrete shall be in accordance with I.S. 456 2000 with
amendments.

(b) Aggregate :

(i) Fine aggregate i.e. Sand to be used for concrete work shall be exclusively coarse
sand. Sand will confirm to I.S. specification particularly in respect of clay
content, fineness modules and grading. If it contains deliterious materials by more
than 3% by weight the same shall be washed before using for concrete work.
Presence of mica shall not be more than 1% by weight. The fineness modules
shall range between 2.60 and 3.20. The natural sand mused for RC work shall
have a grading conforming to one of the three zones : Zone I, Zone II or Zone III.

(ii) Coarse aggregate shall consist of machine crushed of igneous or metamorphic

origin. It shall be chemically inert, hard, strong, durable or of limited probity free
from adherent coatings, glassy or powdery surfaces. It shall be free from reactive
substances which participate in alkali aggregate reaction. This shall be free from
stone dust except as permitted which the limits of suitable grading. Moreover it
shall not contain pieces of disintegrated stones, soft, flaky and elongated particles,
salt, alkali, vegetable matter and other deleterious material in such quantities as to
reduce the strength or durability of the concrete or attack the steel reinforcement.
Unless otherwise specified the size of coarse aggregate shall conform to clause 4.2
of I.S. : 456. All aggregate shall be suitable graded from the maximum certified
gauge to the minimum in conformity with the requirement laid down in I.S. 383.
When required by the Engineer-in-Charge, the aggregates shall be tested for the
following tests in accordance with I.S. : 2386.

(1) Sieve analysis.

(2) Determination of clay, fine silt and fine dust.
(3) LDS Angles abrasion value or Aggregate impact value.
(4) Water absorption.
(5) Bulking of sand.
(6) Flakiness index.

(c) Water :

Water used for both mixing and curing of concrete / brick work / block work / plaster
shall be clean, free from oil, acid, salts, sugar, alkali or other chemicals and
deleterious matter. Storage of water shall conform to IS : 4082 – 1996.

The water cement ratio for cement concrete of various proportions shall be as per
Table –4, clause 5.5.2.3.

All concrete shall be mixed by mechanical mixers except otherwise permitted by the
Engineer-in-Charge. If hand mixing is allowed due to some unavoidable circumstances, then
quantity of cement shall be increased by 10% above that specified.

All R.C.C. work shall be compacted by mechanical vibrator. In case of slab plate vibrator are
to be used and pin vibrator are to be used in case of beam, columns, etc.

The mixing, transporting, placing, compacting and finishing the concrete shall be so arranged
that all operations are completed within 20 minutes of mixing the water. The method of
placing shall be such as to avoid segregation and shall be done in a balanced manner to avoid
eccentric loads on form work. The inside surface of the forms against which concrete is to be
placed shall be clean and free from dried or hardened spattering or coatings of concrete.

Curing of concrete shall commence immediately after setting the concrete in position and
shall be continued for a period not less than 14 days reckoned from the date of completion of
concreting. The top surfaces of slabs and other horizontal surfaces shall be cured by
impounding water in cement mortar bunds at all times till the curing period is over. All other

exposed concrete viz columns, side of beam etc. shall be covered with hession or similar
material which shall be kept continuously wet during the specified curing period.
Immediately after the removal of forms any undulations depression, honey combings, broken
edges or corners, shall be made good and finished with cement mortor 1: 3.
Where the concrete surfaces is to receive plaster, the surface shall be roughened immediately
after removal of forms and within a day thereof to secure a hold for the plaster. Concrete after
finishing shall be cured for the full time period.
All precaution shall be taken as will ensure that the finished roof is water tight without any
leakage under all weather conditions. Particular care should be taken in providing good
workmanship especially of vulnerable points such as.
a) Joints between roof and parapets etc.
b) Rain water outlets.
c) Water proofing treatment.
The cube testing shall be done for all R..C.C. of proportion 1:2:4 or richer
mixture.
