Analyzing Interview Data

The data analysis method used in the paper is open coding. The author used the data
collected from the interviews, to identify recurrent themes. In open coding, the data
collected is labelled into concepts, and then categorized on the basis of its
dimensions and properties.
To build and label concepts, the author first has broken the transcripts into pieces
and examined them closely to identify relationships, similarities or dissimilarities and
basis this analysis, the author then groups into different categories.
After this initial coding of the data, the author has then done focussed coding to
further abstract the concepts by breaking down into distinct ideas and objects. The
labels used to describe the codes in this stage can be decided by using a software or
can be taken from the content.
Next, once the initial codes has been determined, the codes are then again analyzed
for similarities and dissimilarities to categorize them based on their common
properties. Sub-categories are also created in this stage and then linked to the
original categories. Data reduction was also done after this stage to find out core
categories to further abstract the identified sub categories.
The author also used constant comparison, whereby each finding was compared with
existing findings to help find new insights and continued interviewing new people
and studying the data till saturation was reached and no new conclusions were
found.
Finally, based on the core categories as found in this process, the authors have then
created a framework to describe the inter-relationships among the identified
variables.
