STATISTICAL TESTS ASSIGNMENT

1. LINEAR REGRESSION ON THE ‘WATER QUALITY-10 FEB 2015’ DATA.

A Linear regression test was carried out to examine if there exists any relationship( correlation and variation) and
whether there is a significant difference between Free chlorine(mg/L)[ independent variable] and Total
Chlorine(mg/L)[ dependent variable] . The results are as shown below;

GRAPH OF TOTAL CHLORINE(mg/L) AGAINST FREE CHLORINE(mg/L)
 The above test results reveal that there is a strong positive coefficient of relation, R=0.947a. It also shows
that there is a strong coefficient of variation.
 From the results tabulated above, the significant P value is 0.066 which is greater than 0.05. This implies
that Ho will be accepted and therefore there is no significant difference between the free chlorine (mg/L)
and the total chlorine (mg/L).
 According to the graph of TOTAL CHLORINE(mg/L) against FREE CHLORINE(mg/L), there is a strong
relationship between these two variable and the equation of the regression line is y=0.1+ 4.33 x
INDEPENDENT TEST ON ‘PIPE CHARACTERICS’ DATA
An independence samples t-test was conducted on the ‘pipe characteristics’ to investigate whether there was a
significant difference between Steel motor lined material(group 1.00) and asbestos cement material(group 2.00) of
pipes with the test variable being HWC factor. The results are as shown in the tables below;

The results shown in the above table reveal that the Levene’ s test for equal variances, the p-value (0.027) is way
below 0.05 which implies that there is a significant difference between the two variances and therefore we report
to bottom row for t-test information. This implies that our p-value is 0.05 and since our p-value is equal to 0.05,it
means that we accept the null hypothesis and conclude that there is no significant difference between Steel motor
lined material(group 1.00) and asbestos cement material(group 2.00) in relation to the HWC factor. Steel motor
lined material (Mean=700.00; sd=271.1088) reported higher levels of diameter and length than Asbestos cement
material (Mean=196.364; sd=125.4012).

ONE WAY ANOVA TEST ON ‘CAR DATA’ EXCEL SHEET

Within Groups 3322.333 15 221.489
Total 25875.368 37

A one way ANOVA(analysis of variance)test was carried out to examine whether there were statistically significant
differences between the number of cylinders and horsepower with the weight being the test or reference variable.
The degrees of freedom (df is the same, that is 22, 15 and 37 respectively). The p-values from the above table are
0.001 and 0.002 which are both less than 0.01 or 0.05. This implies that we reject the null hypothesis which states
that there is no significant difference between the cylinders and the horsepower, and the weight, and accept the
alternative hypothesis which states that there is a significant difference between the cylinders and the
horsepower, and the weight.

A paired samples test to examine whether there are significant differences between the students’ marks for the two
tests was carried out. According to the first table, the mean and standard deviation of the two samples is almost the
same. Furthermore, the paired samples have a medium positive correlation of 0.449. The p- value, 0.069, is greater
than 0.05; it implies that we accept our null hypothesis at 95% interval and conclude that there is no significant
difference between the students’ marks for the two tests.

A one-sample t-test was carried out to examine if the test value (pH=7) is the actual pH of water using the various pH
values noted in the data on water quality. The test results revealed that mean value of the pH values at different
sites is 7.127 with a standard deviation of 0.2086 which clearly shows that there is not much difference between the
average value of pH values obtained at various sites and our test value(pH=7). The p value, 0.034, is less than 0.05.
This implies that we reject our null hypothesis( at 95% confidence interval of the difference), which states that pH
value is 7, and accept the alternative hypothesis which states that our pH value for this set of data is not 7.
