What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you to approximate and seek a precise and accurate measures of
measurements of a certain thing to be used by everyone. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

This module is about approximation of measurements. It is divided into two

lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Measures of Temperature

• Lesson 2 – Measures of Time and Rate

After going through this module, you are expected to approximate the measures
of quantities, particularly the temperature, time and rate (M7ME-IIa-3).
Specifically, you will:
1. define the different units of measurement;
2. illustrate the appropriate units of measurement;
3. relate the use of appropriate units of measurement in daily activities.

Measurements

Measurement is very important in our daily lives. We need to answer

questions that begin with how long, how far, how much, how hot or how cold,
so on. All these questions require some kind of measurement before they can
be answered.

What’s In

Activity 1: Hot or Cold?

Let’s Find Out: What is the temperature?
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook, ballpen
Let’s Do It This Way: Look at the picture below and tell whether it’s hot or
cold. Write your answer in your Mathematics
notebook.

1. An ice cream is _________.

2. The coffee is _________.
3. The flame is _______.
4. The ice cubes are __________.

Lesson
Measures of Temperature
1

In the news, a meteorologists reports about the day’s weather forecast.

In addition to telling you what the weather conditions will be like (sunny, cloudy,
rainy, muggy), they also tell you the day’s forecast for high and low
temperatures. A hot summer day may reach 38°, while a cool day may have a
lower temperature of 22°.

What’s New

It was a hot morning when the rain suddenly pour. Rolly was tempted to
play in the rain. After playing in the rain, Rolly got a fever.
To check Rolly’s body temperature, what instrument are you going to
use? What do you think is Rolly’s temperature and what is the appropriate unit
in measuring temperature?

What Is It

Temperature refers to the degree of hotness or coldness that can be

measured using a thermometer (from the Greek word thermos means “heat”
and metron means “measure”). The units used in measuring temperature are
degree Celsius (℃), kelvin (K) and degree Fahrenheit (℉). Degree Celsius is
named after the Swedish astronomer, Anders Celsius. Kelvin is named after
the British physicist Sir William Thompson, Lord Kelvin and degree Fahrenheit
is named after the German maker, Gabriel Fahrenheit.

5
The metric system uses degree Celsius and kelvin as the units of
temperature, whereas degree Fahrenheit is used in the English system.
Temperature measures in kelvin are usually seen in scientific work, whereas
degree Celsius is often used to note the temperature in one’s everyday
activities.
Some temperatures that are often measured as follows: atmospheric
temperature (usually given in weather reports), body temperature (used to
determine illness) and oven temperature (used in cooking). You use the same
scales in measuring all these temperatures; however they have different ranges
of temperatures.

The following are some examples to illustrate units of

temperature:

a. The normal human body temperature is about 37ºC or

98.6 ºF.
b. The freezing point of water is 0ºC or 32ºF and its boiling
point is 100ºC or 212ºF.
c. Absolute zero, which is 0 K, means the complete absence
of heat and motion. So 0 K is equivalent to -273.15 ºC or -
459.67 ºF.
d. A moderate oven temperature is 175ºC.

11. To preserve meat, it must be stored at 4 _____.

Lesson
Measures of Time and Rate

Primitive men used to tell time by the position of the sun, stars and the
moon, and the behavior of the animals. They used the sundial, the water clocks,
and the hour glasses for hundreds of years until the invention of the mechanical
clocks, the stately grandfather clocks, the quartz and digital watches, and more
recently, the atomic clocks.

What’s New

Every girl’s most awaited celebration is their 18th birthday. Have you
noticed that some girls would tag their 18th birthday as a decade and 8? How
many years do you think are there in a decade?

What Is It

In measuring time, second(s) is considered as the standard unit. Clocks

and calendars are tools for indicating time. The two commonly used clocks are
the 12-hour and the 24-hour clocks. The 12-hour clock uses A.M. and P.M. to
indicate hours before and after noon. The A.M. is an abbreviation of Latin word
ante meridiem means “before midday” and P.M. is an abbreviation of Latin word
post meridiem means “after midday”.

8
Unit Measure of Time and Their Equivalents
1 minute (min) = 60 seconds (s)
1 hour (hr) = 60 min.
1 day (d) = 24 hr
1 week (wk) = 7d
1 month (mo) = 30 d
1 year (yr) = 12 mo = 365 d = 52 wk
1 leap year = 366 d
1 decade = 10 yr
1 score = 20 yr
1 century = 100 yr
1 millenium (pl. millenia) = 1 000 yr
Let’s examine the example in What’s New.

Every girl’s most awaited celebration is their 18 th birthday. Have you

noticed that some girls would tag their 18th birthday as a decade and 8? How
many years do you think are there in a decade?

Solution:
1 decade = 10 years
Therefore, a decade and 8 years is just equivalent to 18 years.

Now, let’s have another example.

Alma left at 5:00 A.M. and got home at 9:00 P.M. How long was it since
she left home?

Solution:
The two time measures are just within a single day. So you can
rewrite these times as 24- hour clock: 5:00 A.M. as 5:00, and 9:00 P.M.
as 21:00.
Subtract the two time measures like this: 21 00
- 05 00
16 00
Therefore, Alma left home 16 hours ago.

9
Dean can travel 4 km in 2 hours using his bicycle. What is his average
speed?

Solution:
Average speed refers to the distance traveled at the given time.
4 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
Average speed = = 2 𝑘𝑝ℎ
2 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

Therefore, Dean’s average speed is 2 kph.
