continue to make films rapidly-two, three, four a year.

of a stalled film is on the phone in a roadside booth, his face
red with anger, clamoring with the producer to fork over
more money so that the film can proceed.) So we walked a
few blocks to the Ginger Man for lunch, Rainer's leather-
armor crunching away. He came on as a tough hombre, no

wimp this big gay guy. Tall, well-built, Tartar mustache and
flinty eyes that didn't meet yours, he always seemed to be on
the cusp of anger and insult. At the table he was silent,

early films were made quickly (one- to three-week shoots)
on very low budgets (in the low six figures and some for
much less). Now, at the height of his career, he was more
relaxed, given to a good deal of high spirits and comfort
with others. He thanked me for my work in getting his films
shown here. There were no grunts now, only charming
smiles. The lion was tame.

Since he worked quickly, enjoying the making more
than the finished film itself, often going with only one
take, his films do not have the polish and intricacy of a
Resnais or an Antonioni film. He was not interested in
making masterpieces. He was more interested in the next
film than in discussing a past work. In this, he resembled
Godard. His dream was to be in an ongoing utopia, work-
ing with people he liked, spinning works from the loom of
his anarchic imagination. He once said: "I would like to
build a house with my films. Some are the cellar, others the
walls, still others the windows. But I hope in the end it
will be a house."
